Default If you can't find Nu Salt & need potassium

I spoke with my friend (pharmacist) today and told him of my difficulty in finding a potassium suppliment that was over 160mg. I told him that I needed 500mg/day & that I did not want to take 4-5 pills/day. He told me that 600mg of potassium is available OTC, you just have to ask the pharmacist. They are $9.00CDN for 100 pills which is much better than paying $6 for 90 pills that you have to take 5/day of. They are normally used by people who are taking diuretics and need to increase their potassium. I'm sure if you explain why you need them they will dispense them. If they do not, and have a problem with LC...I don't normally advocate lying but...

thank you so much, Nolly, for your precious advice. I just got a bottle of 600mg potassium pills, slow release, for $7.99. I didn't need to explain anything, I just asked the pharmacist and she fetched me the bottle and told me the price. whew...

thank you!

Wow thanks! I just read this. I wish I would have known before I bought my 2 bottles of 100Mg Potassium last night. Hehe. Well I'll have to pay a little visit to my pharmacist. =) "Give me a lil sump'n sump'n."

Thanks again, Kirsten

Default OK, here's the scoop from CVS

The pharmacist at CVS told my son that the CVS brand that he keeps for this purpose (Potassium Cluconate) is 598mg, but that is not all potassium. There are fillers in it. The actual potassium count is 99mg. This is only 9 more than the pills I bought off the shelf.

He also warned that you should not take more than 2 pills per day. I am wondering why when 1 banana has 185 mg in it.

I do know that they say that the reason potassium pills are not sold in higher limits is that they should be taken with food or they could damage your stomach. That is why you can get 340mg from just one fourth teaspoon of Morton lite salt and even more from the Nu salt. You eat that on food.

My son brought me a bottle of these CVS pills and with his discount they were only $3.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Nolly, but you may want to ask your pharmacist about the actual potassium count of your pills.
