Do you really, really loathe cigarettes, cigarette smoke and smokers? Do you wish you had never started smoking?

This is something that really bugs me, so I just thought I'd share the bug.

I'm confused, though. Does this mean that if I buy products from these Phillip Morris affiliated companies/brands that I am supporting the tabacco industry?

Any idea what proportion of their business is actually in tabacco?

Sounds like it's time for us all to join a community farm and go Paleo!

But really, a rediculous percentage of our school's budgets, and road repair money in this state is coming from cigarette taxes. It's good to know they are good for something.

Thanks very much for posting that. I'm guilty of using Philly plain cream cheese, but I didn't realize who owned it. Duh.

I've made a personal commitment to never eat a Kraft product again... because they run so many foods on the same production lines that they can't guarantee that any of their items are free of allergens.

Other vendors like Hormel are more than happy to produce safe foods, with accurate labels

Ha, and we all think we live in democracies.....Small businesses can't compete with these monstrosities, because Kraft/Miller products are much cheaper (due in part to the sweat of third world workers and the nasty refined and cheap ingredients that are present in EVERY SINGLE ONE of these food items) THe corporate agenda is not one that is positive to the populace and yet we still buy into the system. The main reason I moved away from my hometown (a suburb of Portland) is that increasingly the personality of the place had been sucked away and replaced with McDonald's and BLockbuster Video and 7-11's and Starbucks and other lifeless generic places and my local coffee shop was driven away and the local restaurants were empty......because everyone started going to the new TGI fridays, etc. IMHO, the suburbs in the U.S. are a dead place because of the corporate BRAND NAME.

I am not a radical hippie or anything, but I really dislike the way my neck of the woods (the US) is changing in terms of corporate mergers, etc. Hell, I'm an idealist, but is it really too much to ask to NOT see two starbucks on the same block??

The answer to my question was easy to find using the link.
61% of their 2000 revenue ($ 80,316,000,000 total revenue) came from tabacco. Yes, that's over $ 80 billion; it is not a typo. And it was a 3.2% increase over the previous year. The total from Phillip Morris tabacco in 2000 was thus $ 48,992,760,000.

That makes me sorry for smokers. It's sad enough that they're making themselves ill to support their addiction. Apparently they're impoverishing themselves too. Sigh.

I suppose the same would apply to breakast cereals. What are you actually getting in that box that is of value?

I was just having a live discussion about this. We were wondering if they own any drug companies? Smoke, drink, eat carbs and other questionable products, get depressed, get sick, then we'll sell you drugs. It would be the perfect set-up!
