I agree with Lobstergal. Buy a SMALL amount and give it a try, it is one of those things that has its own unique taste. I know alot of people who don't dig the texture of cottage cheese, though I like it alot. I generally sprinkle with ground pepper and salt, then throw hot banana pappers on top.

It kinda tastes like tapioca pudding, but not as sweet, more milky. And the lumps are more chewy.

Thanks guys for all the observations.

I did take the advice picking up a very small container of the small curd tonight. I opted for the regular flavor just to see how it's natural taste would be like.

Ah, it's interesting, in a *bland* sort of way. I guess, the only way I can describe it is that I suppose this is how "low fat protein" would taste like.

Hm, I'm wondering if the flavored ones would be more palatable.

PS: Serre, I suppose you can imagine my expression when trying this for the first time? LOL My dilemma persists, cottage cheese or shakes? Neither...

Oh my! I can't hardly imagine someone never having eaten cottage cheese. I've eaten it my whole life--store-bought and home-made. Home-made is more like ricotta because you don't have the creamy sauce on it.

In my opinion, good cottage cheese tastes more like cultured buttermilk than anything else. I also like it just with salt and pepper or on salads.

It's very simple--and oh so good! It's not like store-bought, like I said more like Ricotta.

(This is a really easy recipe--some are more complicated.)
Heat 2 quarts of milk to lukewarm. Dissolve 2 rennet tablets in 2 tablespoons of cold water and add to milk. Stir two minutes. Let stand undisturbed in a warm place until set, about 1 hour. Pour into a drain bag (cheesecloth) and let it drain 3 to 4 hours. Remove from bag and break into fine pieces. Moisten with cream and season with salt and pepper to taste.

I might make a note, that the cream is optional. We usually just ate it without the cream.
