Default communion

I know this seems like a strange post and I probably shouldnt be thinking about carb count when I am about to take the Lord's Supper........but my church uses Mogan David concord grape wine (sweet!!!!) and Who knows what communion wafers are made of. Oppinions anyone? Is this something I need to worry about? I know that we are talking a very small amount of wine and bread, but I am worried. Help, please...........

P.S. I wont be offended if y'all tell me I am being silly or obsesive.

I take the Euchrist several times a week and don't sweat it at all. But, of course, I am Catholic so it's not really wheat and wine anyway.

Great Post Paris!!!

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. It is such a minimal about of either, it probably won't matter. If you are truly concerned, figure the actual carb count of each item and count it in your daily carb intake. Ask the person in charge of communion exactly what is provided. Certainly it can not be that much. Even if you have to "sacrifice" a few or most of your carbs for that one day per week, or go over once per week, as long as you are careful the rest of the day, I wouldn't be concerned about it. I don't think I personally would consider giving up taking communion.

Good luck to you!

Thats funny because the same thought ran through my mind in church yesterday... my DH kindly reminded me that " it's the body of Christ, it has no carbs"...it sure made me realize that maybe I'm getting a little too obsessive about carb counting....hahaha......

I have never thought about the carb count, but I don't drink at all. So I do always think about the wine there. The last time I had a wine cooler 4 years ago I had a horrible reaction and was sick for a week! All I ever do is take the smallest sip I can - just have my lips touch the little glass. I have never thought about the wafer. I wouldn't think it would have many carbs or calories.

I've seen this question a couple of times before and the best answer I've ever seen is exactly what Paris said, it's not wheat and wine, it's the body & blood of Christ, so it can't be bad for you.

IF (and this would be an unlikely if with such small quantities) you found it triggered cravings or hunger, I would just make it a policy to have a good protein snack as soon as you get home from church, that would take care of the cravings.

I know some churches only have communion about 4 times a year. Since you say it is grape juice and not wine, I wonder if you are in one of those congregations? (Many that do weekly communion use real wine). If it's just once a quarter, I doubt that there is any serious problem, even if it does bring you above your "nominal" carb count for the day.

Even if it's a weekly thing, though, if it really concerns you I'd just take a truely symbolic amount: basically, let the food touch your lips, but not really eat much. That's what I've done at ritual meals when I felt that the food being offered was not something I could handle.

I know someone makes communion wafers that are wheat free -- but I have NO idea what they use instead, so I have no idea if they are also low-carb!

(I once listened to a group of very serious vegetarians debate whether they could take communion . . .)

I had to smile when I read your post since I was thinking the same thing yesterday also at communion. Then I smiled at myself for being so silly. I'm baptist and we use the juice and bread. I really think the amount of carbs is minimal so I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's a fairly good trade off anyway. Being able to partake of the Lord's supper vs. whatever carbs may be in the communion food.

Thank you for posting this. I actually found all of this very interesting as I am not Christian. It's nice to hear and learn about new things.

This way of eating is a way of life. That's the real issue, right? You don't want to give up communion for life, so I wouldn't worry about it.
