Okay, I've seen several messages here on lc yogurt. Does it really help w/ weight loss, and what brands are okay to use. I've some people talk about different carb levels for different diets? like the go diet? Can someone please explain it to me, I dont remember reading about yogurt in atkins book.
Thanks

Everyone seems to agree that the yogurts marketed as "low carb" are ok...and only some of us agree on the "yogurt exeption" theory which says that the fermenting and bacteria kill most of the sugar, making yogurt low-carb anyway. For safety, just buy the "real" low carb yogurts, like Carb Countdown, Dannon.

I buy the Greek yogurt (I get it at Trader Joe's). Its more like the texture of sour cream, and I drain the whey off the top of the container. I use DaVinci's syrup or Torani to flavor, and sometimes add ground flaxseed as well. The great thing about Greek Yogurt is it is much lower in carbs, about 2 for a half cup, and since its thicker, you feel like you are eating more.

Blue Bunny makes Carb Freedom yogurt. I get it at Wal-Mart for 48 cents for a 6 oz. container. Meijer also sells it, but it's more expensive. However, Meijer currently has Dannon's Carb Countdown on sale - 2 packages of 4 for $3.00.

You shouldn't drain the whey! That's where you lose all the beneficial live cultures, which are great for your digestive tract and internal health,a nd MAY even eat up the negligible amount of carbs...

Hey! Your store has better sales than mine! My Albertson's grocery store has the Carb Smart yogurt on sale at two (four packs) for $4.00. Not fair!

yogert is one of those thing that some of us eat, and some don't.

to answer your question about helping loose weight. it doesn't HELP you loose weight. i think people eat it cause they like how it tastes.

your other question on what brands are okay. it is a taste thing. i HATE the lc brands they have come out with. i use just plain ole plain and add fresh berries and a little splenda. make sure you count it in your daily carb totals. depending on where you are at in your plan (induction, owl, maintence) you may or may not have room for the extra carbs.

i am pretty sure yogurt is considered dairy. and it is not listed in the acceptable food list so if you are on induction is is not "allowed"

I personally love the Hood Carb Countdown Yogurt & Yogurt Smoothies - ALL FLAVORS!!!

They have the fewest sugars of any of the low-carb ones.. Blue Bunny has 5 sugars per serving. I have not tasted the Blue Bunny ones yet - figure I should stick with the lowest sugar ones available.

I use the Dannon - I prefer the strawberry but have been on a vanilla kick lately - I add some cinnamon sprinkled on it - I don't care for the peach! I also like the Carb Countdown Yogurt Smoothies...they are really thick and filling. I don't use them every day - but every now and again when I want something and the thought of one more piece of cheese or pork rind is enough to gag anybody.

I'm with you, beans -- I tried eating a serving of full-fat plain unsweetened yogurt once, to see how it would affect me. It gave me a full-blown sugar reaction -- sugar high, then sugar low and falling asleep. Apparently I've been "blessed" with body chemistry that tells me very specifically when I eat sugary foods . . .

Greek yogurt is make from goat's milk (like feta cheese, goat cheese, etc). It's got a lot less milk sugars than cow's milk. Ever eat Gyro's? The tziaziki (sp) sauce that comes on the side (some people call it cucumber-yogurt sauce) is made with Greek Yogurt, so if you've had that you might be familiar with the taste.

I eat Dannon's LC yogurt also. I like the raspberry and the strawberry mixed with 1/2 cup of strawberries. I have moved into OWL recently so that's not a problem. One thing though, I only allow myself yogurt on the days I work out after my workout is finished.
