Default Carbtopia Brownies

Anyone tried this mix? Made them last night and all I can say is, yuck and why bother. Too cakey, with a WEIRD smell and taste. I'll save the 4 carbs for something better, thanks!

I've heard the Atkins brownie mix is great. I have a box, but haven't made it because it turns out that they're like 9 carbs apiece. If you crave brownies, maybe this is one to try for an occasional treat, though.

The Atkins brownie mix is awesome, but high in carbs. When I make them I make 24 mini muffins, and I allow myself one as a treat now and then. I keep them in the freezer, and they are great right out of the freezer, for some reason they don't freeze rock solid.

I doctor my Atkins brownie mix with unsweetened cocoa and melted butter. I also add tons of walnuts. On it's own, I find it too sweet. But after a little fiddling, it's very good.

Betsy Jane -

I am so sorry that happened to you. The Carbtopia brownies suck, suck, suck! I am so sorry that I ordered them for my low carb store.

I made them for a weekly low carb dinner group. The comments were: tastes like dirt; tastes chalky; where's the flavor?; can taste cinnamon but nothing else; tastes like (bad) dark bread

WARNING! The frosting is just as gross. I thought, "Low carb frosting! How cool!"

But no. It thickens to a pudding consistency. Gelatenous. The one we tried was chocolate. Gritty.
Are you ready for the grossest comment of all? It looks like when you have bronchitis and you drink hot chocolate and then hack something up.

I (of course) called the company and told them my concerns. (That there wasn't a flavor, that it tasted like they forgot to add sweetener, that the directions say "2 C" of mix, yet there's more than that in the bag, that it didn't specify pan size...)

The company rep said she was so surprised! The brownies are a best-seller! (Well, of course they are. The packaging is adorable. But I can guarantee there are not repeat customers).

She said they have a no returns policy. (Hmm... I wonder why?) She also said someone would call us back. We're not waiting any longer. We're calling on Monday.

Thanks for letting me vent,

Tammera

Thanks for the warning. I'm always one to try new things. I thank you very much for telling me about that one. These low carb things aren't cheap so any time I can save some money it's great advice. Another thing to watch out for is the donut mix from Dixie Carb Counters. We made that one Sunday morning cuz we were missing our coffee and donuts and they were so gross that it only took one bite and I not only had to spit it out, I had to rinse my mouth it was so awful. My experience when I called them was a bit more pleasant. The lady asked me if I deep fat fried them. I said no, cuz it said I could bake them. I asked her if it would help to deep fat fry them. She said that they're actually worse deep fried. She agreed and since she was so nice I didn't even think of asking for a refund. In this case, the icing they have in the mix is actually pretty good except for that splenda aftertaste that too much splenda will get you. So watch out cuz these are the donuts that are in the Atkins catalogue. They're not made by Atkins at all, wish they were or they would probably be better. Who knows, I hate Atkins pancake mix too. But their lemon poppyseed muffins are good. Annie

When I think of all the mixes and baked stuff I have thrown out (and it takes a lot before I throw anything out!) I could make a car payment or even two! The worst was $24 worth of "brownies" that I couldn't even swallow and I think the seagulls wouldn't even eat them.

I used to love the atkins muffin mixes, before they changed the ingredients and called them "quick cuisine" with more carbs and a bigger price. So now I stick to specific companies unless someone raves on this forum about a product, then I will try it. My strategy is to reach deep and buy "expensive" stuff that I know will satisfy me. Overall, I have ended up spending less money in total and weaning myself of having too many sweets in my life. I eat fewer baked things and candies, but never waste money throwing stuff out or, more importantly, beating myself up over wondering why the heck I am wasting my carbs on this stuff!

I've had similar interactions with companies as written above. I know I keep tooting their horn, but I adore Maine Cottage Foods stuff, and the attitude of the company is right on. If you can cough up the money for their stuff, you won't be disappointed while you look for mixes that work. And they are really good to you if you have any problems. I also like the Control Carb brownies. That's a world's bigger company than Maine Cottage Foods. Does anyone know if they sell mixes or just premade stuff? And have you tried it?
