Smile I ran a 5K!

Well I jogged about more than 1/2 of it and walked the rest. But it felt really good to even run as much as I did. The 5K was yesterday and I am still in shock of how much I ran. The only reason I had to stop a few times was because I got a side ache. Is that caused by breathing wrong?

Side ache - side "stiches" are from shallow breathing. Either to walk or slowing down and trying to breath deeply can help. I know, in the heat of a race it is hard to slow down:-))

Here more words from the experts:

Congratulations, way to go:-)
Any 10k plan?

I avoid stiches by exhaling on three consecutive stride then inhale for 3 strides. I have found that if I do that I avoid the stitch. My understanding is the stich comes from actually not exhaling enough and having too high a build up of CO2 .

dug,

I have the same rule as you have. If during my 3+ miles runs I have to breath 2-2 it is a sure sign for me, that I have to slow down otherwise side stiches will kill me. According my speedwork/race experience I can handle 2-2 (shallow breathing) for 2-3 miles, but then stiches stiches strike:-(

Congrats on your 5km! Whoo Hoo!

My first 5k of the year is going to be the Mothers Day Run.... I love that one!

For stitches....I slow down or walk fast, deep breaths and at the same time raise your arm (on the same side you're getting your pains) and stretch way up high!

Someone told me that once upon a time.....and lo & behold it worked! Hope it does for you too!
