Question L-Carnatine for weight loss....

Does anyone know what the deal with L-Carnatine is? Does it really work and can you get it in Canada?

Some people says it works, some say it doesn't. The last I heard it's not supposed to be available in Canada, but may be kept "under the counter" in some suppliment stores. For weight loss you need to take a good sized dose daily, and it's very expensive. Most people try it but only take a little because it's so expensive, but that's just a waste of money.

In other words, not worth your time unless you're made of money and even then it still might be snake oil.

This is what I've read. I've never actually taken the stuff before.

I just posted a similar thread under Nutrition and Supplements. At GNC they told me it's not available in Canada. Some people in that thread said that they have been able to get it "under the counter", but it's very expensive. But...Doreen said that "Carnitine" is available by prescription, so I'm going to checking that out with my doc next time I go.

Hope that helps - and I'll let you know!

Rocky

I was able to purchase L-Carnitine at most vitamin/health stores in the GTA (not at GNC). The only problem was that the brand changed from month to month. I have now opted to purchase L-Carnitine from the US so that I don't have to switch brands.

Unless you physically go across the border and buy it, you won't be able to order from the US .. it will be stopped by Canada Customs. Carnitine and most other single amino acid supplements are not permitted to be sold without prescription here ... although as noted, some health food stores will have it under the counter, for a premium price. It's not unlawful for you to have in your possession as long as you declare that it's for personal use only, not for resale.

There's only a few single aminos you can buy off the shelf here ... glutamine, taurine and (I *think*) dl-phenylalanine.

Wow, I had no idea it wasn't allowed. I got mine at our local health food store, but I did have to ask for it! And it did cost alot! Is it much cheaper in the States? I go across the border shopping often, so I could pick it up there if it is substantially cheaper.
