Angry Fear campaign

"AN unprecedented government campaign against the popular high-fat, low-carbohydrate Atkins diet will be launched today."

"Victoria's Labor Government will be the first in Australia to roll out a hard-hitting educational campaign to alert people to the dangers of the diet."

I love how the article is filled with maybes and could bes but no actual hard fact that Atkins is bad for you.

Actually I agree that banning entire food groups is probably bad for you, that's why I do eat carbs, from veggies, high fat dairy, and the occasional fruit. Perhaps these same people should have come out against banning entire food groups when Dean Ornish decided that cutting fats to practically zero was a good thing.

And who honestly thinks a low-fat diet is more sustainable in the long run than a low-carb diet? That is absolutely beyond stupid and ridiculous. It's much easier to eat low-carb than it is to eat low-fat.

Jeez, haven't they read the New England Journal of Medicine, or the Journal of the American Medical Association? The NEJM recommends (in a circular way) the Atkins for morbidly obese patients. There have been a flurry of studies done in the US, the lastest at OHSU in Oregan, which show that it is NOT harmful. I will put on my conspiracy theory hat and say that the government is getting money from the diet industry, so they don't want a diet that works! I really have no idea how the Austrailian government works, but it would make sense in the USA!

Another thought - wouldn't banning the food group junk food, be really good for you? That is what we are doing.

I agree with the article that anyone starting this diet should consult a DR. before going on it. There are a couple of reasons I feel this way. First of all there is the chance that your health may have underlying issues that this diet could aggravate. I was put on it by my DR. so I had blood work done before I started and every three months or so they check again. I feel one should be monitored , this keeps you aware of what good things are going on inside as well as outside of your body. Many people say they are on Atkins but infact are not following the real program. I think an honest study should be done to settle the issues once and for all as to the way this has helped many of us to regain our lives while shedding pounds.

Apparently the taxpayers will be footing the bill for the campaign.

http://heraldsun.news.com.au/common...255E661,00.html

Health Minister Bronwyn Pike: "Some people might come out and say, `This is a nanny state – now they are telling us what to eat'; but while I don't think it is the role of the politician to dictate individual preference and behaviour, it is my role to point out when something can actually harm you."

They show a picture of her shoving a "low fat" sandwich at the camera. LOL

Here's another story:

Atkins bosses defend methods

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/co...5E24331,00.html

THE Atkins empire yesterday reacted angrily to a state plan to discourage Victorians from using its diet, accusing Health Minister Bronwyn Pike of failing to do her homework.

Yeah, I thought it was funny how they used comments like "There were concerns" "probably" and "potentially" and not one shred of actual proof of any of these things. What a shocker.

I know that there is NO WAY that I could do low fat for any appreciable amount of time. I tried many times in the past and gave up shortly after because of starvation and feeling incredibly ill. Low carb IS much easier if people would just follow the plan as written.
