Default alcohol

This might seem strange but I am a bit confused on the alcohol
In all the carb counter books I have seen most Spirits contain No carbs
Why should we avoid them if there is no carb count in them?
Any help?

Your body will burn alcohol before it burns anything so it puts fat burning on the hold for as long as there is alcohol in your bloodstream.

Basicly because your body will burn the alcohol for energy first, then carbs, fat, protein last. Also because you may decide to stray from you WOL when your boots are full! I drink Miller lite religiously, I have had no problems, but everybody is different.

Some of the problem is what you mix your spirits with. Some mixers have tons of carbs! Another thing I read is that you can't metabolize fat if your body is metabolizing alcohol. I think it's a YMMV thing. My dad lost a lot of weight on Atkins drinking scotch/water! I try to limit alcohol to weekends only, and I only use mixers with no carbs (rum/Diet Coke is my favorite). I'm not a big fan of beer anyway, but I tried one of the Michelob Ultra beers once and thought it was yuck! I would rather do without than drink that stuff! On the other hand, my sister thinks they're great! Again, YMMV!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention what it does to my "inhibitions" - I'm talking about my CARB inhibitions! All of a sudden, those forbidden foods become not so forbidden!

Triplemom, you are SO right about that. Thats my biggest problem when I'm on business trips. I'm fine staying on my low carb plan until we go out to eat and I have a couple of drinks (vodka & soda) with customers. No carbs in the drinks, but I find that AFTER I've had them I suddenly dont CARE quite so much if stay on my eating plan or not!

Twinky-- you may want to rethink the Amaretto. I do believe it has a good amount of sugar in it. SOmebody correct me if I'm wrong...

You're right about that potatofree, 17 grams actually. Any of the sweet drinks like amaretto, baileys, kalhua etc are prone to being high in carbs. Also, flavored rums have carbs.

I think the main things you can drink are just what I call "straight" alcohols, like vodka, bourbon, scotch etc. and you can mix them with selzer or soda water (you have to make sure you are getting one with no carbs) or diet sodas. There are some low carb beers out now too. I think a good rule of thumb with alcohol is that any drinks that are kind of syrupy/sticky in consistency usually have carbs.

Here is a site with all of the carb counts for different types of liquor:

http://fairburysteaks.com/ep/Carb_C...for_Drinks.html

I also found a link on this site to make your own low carb kalhua:

Twinky-- that's how you learn. I was a bartender, and even I can't always keep track of it all... exact carb counts can be hard to come by. It's safest to do what Sydnarella says and stick to "plain" alcohols mixed with diet-friendly mixers.

I like Baja-bobs margarita mix but it needs a little splenda in with it. Also I really like the Michelob Ultra, personally don't care for Miller Lite....Don't drink alcohol much because I do feel it is a waste of my carbs!

Diet Cuba Libras...are the way to go. Or Martinis.... Agree with the liquors...sweet means carbs. Sometimes I like to have a Grand Manier after dinner...don't know the carb count on that one. Will look up that link and find out. Also like Vodka Gimlets...just a little roses lime goes a long way.
