My triglycerides were at one point at 700, and this WOE brought them down to 43. I'm still amazed myself. Same thing happened with me! My triglycerides were way over 700...."too high to calculate accurately" is what the lab report said. At the time I had been following BFL to the letter. It's a great diet if you do it LC, but LF it's VERY high in carbs. I'd lost 18# on it (in 4 months) and had my blood work done. After 6 months, 2 of them on LC (and a loss of 24#) my triglycerides were under 200.
Unfortunately, my cholesterol levels didn't respond in kind, but actuall went up. Since I have no family history of heart disease, but do have a family history of diabetes (including both siblings and a niece), I wanted to stay on the LC diet, but didn't want to go on Statins.
I did go on the statins and in 6 months my cholesterol levels dropped...my total was under 150. I also started crying constantly and a long-term stomach problem acted up. I went on an anti-depressant and stopped crying, but my stomach got worse. When it got to the point of a week of vomiting everything i ate, and being almost too nauseous to function for almost a month I stopped everything. I was also taking Ibuprophen 800mg 3-4X/day. I stopped that too. The only thing I took was my Nexium and my nausea med when I needed it.
When I went back to my doc, after being off everything for about 3 months, we redid the blood work and everything was back up again.....including my triglycerides, since I'd gone off LC when my stomach started acting up.
Now, my doc wants me back on the statins. I am refusing so far, even tho my numbers are really bad (total over 300). I'm back on LC now. I'm on day 6 of Induction and I'm going to stick with it. My stomach doc wants me on it. He feels it's best with my history, although it won't cure all. I'm also going to ask that I be checked for H. Pylori, the bug that causes ulcers. I read recently it's presence screws up cholesterol absorption and especially causes low "good" cholesterol levels.
I can't go back on that med. I almost lost my job over it! I'm taking flax and fish oils, and I'm going to just wait it out and see what happens......I think. You know, they do scare you! And I'm a nurse!
