Default How to explain Atkins to someone who doesn't have a clue.

How do you explain Atkins to someone who doesn't know what you are talking about when you mention carbs etc? I told a friend of mine at work that I was trying to lose weight and get my cholesterol in check and I could see her look at me strangely when there I am eating bacon and other "fatty" stuff. I tried explaining to her but she's not into carbs and fats etc (she's never had a weight problem) so she was rather lost.

Hmm - how about instead of focusing on the bacon and fats you focus on the fact that you get to eat natural, whole foods that are great tasting and good for you. You can eat beef, chicken, pork, lamb and fish along with wonderful fresh veggies, berries and some other fruits, nuts and seeds. You also get the benefit of real butter, cheese and cream (yum, yum!).

You might also add that you simply bypass anything with any form of sugar and refined flours. This isn't a diet. It's a way of life for health.

Oh, BTW, just because your friend is at or near her proper weight doesn't mean she won't have the same carb induced diseases that many overweight folks have. I'm talking about diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. One of the thinnest people I know who also exercises religiously has high blood pressure, horrible cholesterol and is insulin resistant. Unfortunately she also has it firmly stuck in her head that she absolutely must stick to the low fat way of eating and starve herself to maintain her weight.

I agree with shortstuff. If it is someone without a clue and you need a simple and quick answer:
You have stopped eatting refined sugar and white flour.
If someone wants more details then you can explain more if you wish, but that at least gives them a handle on what you are doing without all of the carb talk.
Good luck

You can also say that you don't eat trans fats and that you're eating more veggies these days.
