Default gyros

Does anyone know the carb content of gyros meat? Believe it or not, I can't find anything about this on any nutritional sites. Obviously, I know that it has lamb in it. But it's, kind of, a pressed meat, and I'm afraid that it also contains some kind of fillers, that are not Atkins friendly. Can someone help me out? I find that when I've tried Atkins, I get derailed because my diet really lacks variety.

Thanks!

There's this greek place near where I work and I've been eating their meat for months and months without any trouble. I have often wondered if it had fillers, but I think the amount would be negligible for the portion size.

I read the thread on the gyros, I still didn't get any concrete answers as to carbs. I have been wanting gyros for a long long time. I went out once and bought some and brought it home to eat, I guilted myself because I didn't know the carb count and threw it all away!!! I have looked and searched all over and still have not found the answer.

If I knew the carbs were very low, I would be out the door in a minute to buy my lunch----early!

Here is a link to some gyro meat info:

http://www.dietfacts.com/item.asp?itemid=14513

It list 4 oz of gyro meat at 14g of carbs, as prepared by the listed restaurant. Not exactly LC.

It depends on where you get it. Some places use filelrs while others use just meat. I've found an occasional greek salad with gyro meat is wonderful though, and the cucumber sauce is very LC. There are online recipes to make your own.

I get gyro meat on greed salad once in a while and its great. I have no problems with it and dont really count it as carbs.

I go to fitday and I look up gyros and I plug in the ingredients minus the bread and eat it.

I asked the people at the gyro place and they said its just meat and they only use olive oil in the salads and for cooking and no sugar in the greek dressing. I just need to remember to ask for the greek salad without the stuffed grapeleaves lol

I seriously doubt its 14g of carbs even with fillers. Its mostly lamb with beef. I think ground lamb and beef combined and they press it.

According to fitday it has no carbs and according to the guy who makes it for me says there is nothing but meat in it and they make it themselves.

You can also find tons of recipes for gyros and I have yet to see one add flour or anything else to the meat that would add 14g of carbs.

I wouldnt worry about the gyros, if you are eating them and still losing then you are fine.

If you are that concerned, just ask the place where you got it from if there are any fillers in the meat.

You guys never had a "REAL" Gyro before than. In Greece and Turkey they do NOT grind the meat and press that crap together. They have a Rack of Lamb on a Rotissery and cut the lamb in Chuncks right of the bone. That is some good eating. That is a Real Gyro. Not no Imitation stuff. Yuck
I had that Imitation stuff once and almost threw up it was so nasty. Once you have the real thing you will never go to the Imitation stuff again.

My aunt owns a restaurant and got me a box..here is what it says.

Serving size 7 slices
Calories 280
total fat 20g
total carb 8g
fieber 2g
protein 17g

Ingredients: Beef, water, lamb. vegetable protein ( soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate, vegetable shortening, soy bean and/or cottonseed oil, ammonium chloride, calcium propionate) onions, cornstarch, salt MSG, Dehydrated onion and galic, spices.

We eat them occasionaly and have had no problems.

miezimau, I agree there is nothing like a "real" gyro but these will do in a pinch!

I have to say that I went against all warnings and instincts and had a gyro (minus the pita and toppings) I got home and ate most of the meat. Wow, how salty it was. I don't remember how salty they were! To top it off I didn't get enough water yesterday and so today have gained back two pounds. YUCK! I know that it is probably water weight, but gosh what a mistake.

I will not do this again.
