Sorry, Lez, but your analysis leaves a lot to be desired. If advertising were the main cause of the obesity epidemic, the first rule of Atkins Induction would be "Throw away your TV." I think you place entirely too much weight (no pun intended) on the role of advertising.

If you want to assign blame, start with the food processors who are busily putting sugar or HFCS in practically EVERYTHING. However, the question of "Whose fault is it that I'm so fat?" seems less useful and interesting to me than the question, "What's the best way for me to lose the excess weight and keep it off?"
