"Preliminary data indicate that the low-carb participants, most of them women, eat about 1,800 calories a day, with 21% of calories coming from carbohydrates"

This comes to 94 grams of carbs a day. Is That "Low carb".

"During the induction or first phase of the Atkins program, dieters are limited to 20 grams of net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) each day, which usually amounts to three cups of salad and a vegetable along with the meat dish. In this phase, dieters are getting only about 10% of their total calories from carbs"

This means that in induction you eat appx 800 calories.
This guy is great in math.

"Medical experts have long expressed reservations about the safety of the Atkins diet, a subject that resurfaced Tuesday with a published report that Atkins was obese and had a history of heart problems when he died."

Oh, yes. Please throw that in, without including the pertinent facts that he wasn't obese when he was admitted to the hospital and the fact that the heart problems were the result of a virus, not diet.

Based on the way this reporting is done, I guess I'll start the rumor that being admitted to a hospital will make you obese, given the fact that Dr. Atkins wasn't before admission. The fact it was caused by failing organs, replacement fluid and medication is totally irrelevant.

Yes, it is Low-Carb. Not exactly Atkins Induction, but still Low-Carb. 94g is about Maintnance levels for Atkins. Some LC Diets are also a little more permissive Carb-wise. Some start off at 40g (Protein Power ???) instead of 20g. Others allow Reward Meals (CAD/Paleo.) Some, restrict the types of Carbs eaten more than the amount (Sugar Busters/Paleo/SBD.)
