Default If you eat olives, eat green!

I was just surprised to find out that:

1 cup of black olives has 8.92 carbs and 4.4 fiber (4.52 net carbs)
1 cup of green olives has 1.91 carbs and 1.47 fiber (0.44 net carbs)

Interesting!

OMG yes!! I was at the local grocery store today and practically fainted when I noticed the disparity between black and green olives. What's interesting though is that I was not able to find any info about the Kalamata olives (the gorgeous blackish-brown Greek ones). Those at my grocery store are found in the fresh bulk area and you scoop your own so there is no label with info. I cannot find them in a jar or at least I did not look hard enough. I have been making all my salads with green ones but I love the true traditional Greek ones to my... err… you guessed it... Greek salad. Now I just wish olives in general did not contain so much salt! yuck

Thanks for the update... hope others who love olives read your post.

One of the stores here has an olive bar with all different types. My favorite is the Greek combo (kalamata, green and some other kind mixed) they are so good I eat them almost every day. I love olives. They also have these huge black ones, I try to just take 3 or 4 of those.
Oh they also have these huge green ones stuffed with Blue Cheese, Feta Cheese, Garlic and some others
yum

I found some interesting info on www.dietclub.com.au

The carb counts seem to differ a little from brand to brand - just to confuse the issue.

This is what I found (for the "Always Fresh" brand) per oz:
[DietClub doesn't give a "cup" default]

Kalamata olives__3.4
Black olives_____3.5
Green olives____2.5

I think it's safe to say kalamata olives are much the same as black.

Cheers.

I like all kinds of olives (I'm half Italian after all) but the green are my least favorite because they taste sooo salty. I'll generally only eat them if they're already in the food someone else prepared. I like the Greek olives, but they are also too salty for me, so I don't eat them too often. I have an "olive dish" (a narrow long tray ) and I'll put several different types of olives in it with olive oil and seasonings and serve at a meal from time to time.

But black olives are another issue. I slice them and put them in just about anything. Scrambled eggs, taco salads, sandwiches (with lo carb bread), salads, or just revert to childhood and stick a pitted colossal olive on the end of each finger and nibble away!

Dag! I love black olives and can't stand the green ones. Thanks for the post though, I will just use 1/2 the amount of black olives that I have been consuming. I always put them on my salads, and I have this mushroom/black olive mix that I fry up in butter and I like to put on top of things like chicken or fish...

Ah well, life's meant to be complicated.

I don't like the green ones and I really don't eat very many of the black ones. I do like the black ones in mexican food dishes. I don't think that way I even eat near a cup of them. So the carb count wouldn't be that effective.

Have a great day!!

I've just taken a quick peek at the Atkins Gram Counter and it says - 5 green olives = 2.5 grams and 5 black olives = 0.7 grams. I love both the green and black ones but have been staying away from the green ones because of the high carbs. So what do I do now!!??!! The green olives have more fat and calories though for those counting calories. I must say sometimes getting things right does get a tad confusing. Will probably stick to the black ones though.

What's the deal???? I also looked at the counter on the back of DANDR and it lists green as higher count than black?
Anyone know who is correct?

Is there such a thing as low sodium olives? I love the little guys, but for some reason at this point in my life, I'm terribly sensitive to sodium. Pooh.

Thanks!

Black ones have much less sodium then the green ones. Check sodium count on the cans or jars.
