Default Water

I am very confused about how much water to drink.

How much is recommended in Litres?

Thanks so much for clearing up my confusion (at last!).

I drink about 2 litres a day of water.

Most people seem to recommend a minimum of 64 ounces of water a day. Sixty-four ounces equals two U.S. quarts, which is approximately the equivalent of two litres (1 U.S. quart = .9464 litres). Therefore, you are right around the minimum recommendation. Some people swear that drinking more than that helps them lose faster -- you need to experiment and see what works for you.

If you are getting a lot of exercise or consuming a lot of caffeine, you probably do need more water than this.

Just wanted to comment that I have noticed for myself that when I keep my water up around 90 oz's a day that it seems to help me loose quicker. But I guess it all does depend on the person. I started out around 64 a day and now do around 90 to 96oz. That's my 2 cents worth...

Yes, it is possible to drink too much water, but it HIGHLY unlikely for anyone other than endurance athletes and infants. The condition is known as hyponaetremia. In short, when these people are sweating very copious amounts of water and electrolytes out of their bodies, and then they only replenish the water, their bodies become very unbalanced and the lack of sodium can eventually kill them.

That said, for the average person who is either sedentary or active at any low, moderate, or moderate-high intensity, it is virtually impossible for this to occur unless you drink 4+ gallons quickly.

When possible, I drink around 2.5-3 gallons of water daily (I've been slacking the last couple of days), and it hasn't hurt me in the slightest. Additionally, I have been losing steadily and while I cannot attribute the success to additional water, I personally believe it has helped.

So, drink up and don't worry.

Hello!
I heard on a health radio segment that a person should drink a minimum of HALF their body weight. For instance, if
you weigh 200 lbs, you should strive to drink at least 100 ozs. I don't know how scientific or accurate this may be, but
it seem like a good rule of thumb for me.

Slightly more than 4 litres = 1 US gallon.

You're welcome.

Nebula: I thought a litre was slightly MORE than a quart, not less, so 4 litres= slightly more than a gallon. Anyway, they're pretty close (my 500 mL bottle says 1 pint, .9 ounces), so if you just think of them as 1:1, Italiagirl, you won't go wrong.

Thanking you all kindly!

I feel better about how much water i drink now!

You hear so many different things - 1. drink lots of water 2. dont drink to much

all conflicting and crazy! the 'experts' never decide from one day to the next!

Thanks!

If you do an internet search for the amount of water you need to drink while dieting you will see that the amount is dependant on how much you weigh with heavier folk needing more water just to maintain hydration. the formula most sites will give you is 64 ounces plus 8 more ounces for every 25 pounds over weight you are. and those ounces are american fluid ounces not weight ounces so it would be 1 extra cup per 25 pounds.
At your current weight that would be 3 more cups for you. here is a link to an article on why you need to be drinking water to lose weight.
