Hi Jen,

I think Slim Fast is too high in carbs for you to be able to use the Slim Fast shakes and stay low carb.

Many of our members here are successfully low carbing (ie with moderate to high fat intakes) who have had their gall bladders removed.

How about searching on "gall bladder" to find some threads that may be of help to you. You could start with the information from Doreen here : http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?p=313937 I hope that helps you.

SlimFast=G.A.G. in my opinion. As Rosebud stated above, there are so many other options you can try. Best of luck to you!

You can still low carb with a moderate fat intake. It might also be the types of fats causing you a problem as well; some without a gallbladder react negatively to dairy fats but have no problem with meat fats for example.
You could try cutting out dairy to see if that helps. If it doesn't, then try lean meats like skinless chicken, fish and leaner cuts of beef to see if that helps.
And something you should definitely stay away from are sugar alcohols.
There are a few people here at least who have had problems with a higher fat intake with no gallbladder but have found that a moderate (not low) fat intake causes them no problems. You'd have to experiment for yourself what level of fat intake you can tolerate, but it can be done.
Considering that 1 can of Slim Fast has 25 grams of carb, mostly coming from sugar, you'll be getting a blood sugar spike and corresponding insulin response with each can you drink and because of that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. You'll probably also find that you're more hungry trying to lose with Slim Fast as well (I know I sure was!) because of the blood sugar/insulin response.

I have done slimfast but found it wasnt sustainable, the shakes are loaded with sugar. I didnt want to depend on drinking shakes for the rest of my life and it doesnt really teach you proper eating.

I lost weight at first then it stopped, I got hungry, ended up binging. My experiences sucked with it.

ive tried it like 4 times too.
along with many other liquid/shake diets etc.

They are good to lose 5 or 10 lbs that you will gain back as soon as you go off it.

at least that was my experience.

good luck with whatever you decide,

MJ

You might look at other LC plans besides the high fat Atkins. Protien Power is lower fat, and South beach is moderate carb and low fat.

There is also the zone diet which is 40% of calories from carbs, and 30% each of fat and protien. They would be a much healthier way to lose fat then trying to choke down a shake every day. Though I do admit the slimfast shakes have improved in taste. They are high calories, high carb and still have fat though. I tried it for a while then noticed I could have a full cereal, egg, or yogurt breakfast for less cals :P

Default Hm......

I had my gallbladder removed one and a half year ago. Before surgery I could not eat fat. After I can eat what I want, - or at least that's what the specialist told me. I've had no problems whatsoever on Atkins. My fat intake is 65-70 % a day. As we're all different it might be a good idea to check out the Gallbladder thread. Lot's of good advice.

Before qitting and do Slim Fast (*yuck*) try what Rosebud said, check out the other poss low carb diets.....or simply modify your fat intake on Atkins....

Please don't give up !!

I've used Slim Fast (and Carnation Instant Breakfast) for 30 years, so I can advise you about that (although not about the gall bladder problem.) I use the Slim Fast Chocolate Royale powder mixed with 2% milk, rather than the cans. While I was trying to lose weight, I cut the carbs down by using 1 Tablespoon of the powder (rather than a whole scoop, which equals 3 Tbs.) and 1 teaspoon of Hershey's cocoa. You don't need to add additional sweetener for the cocoa because the 1 Tbs. of the mix has more than enough sugar to sweeten the 1 tsp. of cocoa. I also heat the milk up before I put in the powder and cocoa -- it mixes better and it tastes like hot chocolate.

I wonder how many carbs you actually save that way? Wouldn't it be easier to just use a low-carb shake?

I don't have a clue about the gall bladder problem. My sister had hers out in 1989. She is a low carber and I've never heard of her having any problems at all so I don't think this has even crossed her mind. There are 3 girls in our family and all 3 of us are now low-carbers after seeing the success of my older sister.

As for Slim Fast! I've tried it several times in my life with no success at all. This last time was right before I decided to try my sister's diet of low carbing. I stayed with Slim Fast for 2 weeks and I had the shake for breakfast, shake for lunch and a balanced dinner of mostly chicken minus skin and veggies. After 2 whole weeks of that I had lost 3 whole ounces so I gave up. The resulting hunger was horrendous! Now I understand the carbs in those shakes were more than enough to keep that weight packed on and I'll never use it again. I still have some in the fridge that I need to throw out. Slim fast is only a gimmick in my opinion. I've never tried weight watchers or Jenny Craig because I'm not rich enough to follow those diets. Atkins is the way I'll go for the rest of my life. Sure, I mess up now and then but then I get myself right back on it. I would suggest the same thing the others did and try to find a fat intake level that agrees with you instead of switching to those expensive other diets. Good luck!

Potatofree --
My SlimFast revision saved me 15 carbs.

I didn't go for the low carb shakes for many reasons: the SlimFast powder is cheaper; I am a creature of habit and I have had one of these every morning for over 30 years [I hate eggs & don't like breakfast cereal]; and I like the way they taste. I was reluctant to invest in a big container of low carb shake mix because I and a picky eater and I was afraid I wouldn't like the taste and then I'd be stuck with it. Actually, I have resisted buying any "low carb" products -- when I started this diet, I vowed to do it with a long-term approach in mind and eating as "normally" as possible.

The bottom line is: the diet has to fit your lifestyle and your likes and dislikes if you are going to do it for the long haul.

By the way, although I have SlimFast every morning, I have never tried the SlimFast diet. My SlimFast is just the successor to Carnation Instant Breakfast, which I started with in my teens. The can of Slim Fast powder is cheaper than the Carnation envelopes.
