Default Tums and carbs?

When I get into deep ketosis, I have acid indigestion, heartburn, whatever you want to call it.

Sometimes it's really uncomfortable.

I take Tums to relieve it. But I'm concerned about the carb content. They taste sweet.

But they don't list the carb content on the package. Also I couln't find it on their website.

Does anyone know anything about this?

It does contain sugar, but I don't think it's enough to worry about. Even if it was pure sugar, it would only be the equivalent of a teaspoon or two.

Are you drinking enough water? I'm not sure being in "deep" ketosis is a good thing...

Oh yeah, I'm pounding water when I'm in ketosis -- like, 8 quarts a day. Something about ketosis makes me really thirsty. Which is probably a good thing since ketones are excreted through your kidneys.

If there IS a teaspoonful of sugar in Tums, then I would worry about it, when you think that it's pretty easy to eat 4-6 of those things in a day. Especially when your stomach and esophagus are on fire.

I've tried Pepcid AC but it doesn't seem to work that well for me.

They do make sugarfree Tums. I use them on the rare occasions I get heartburn anymore. It's been much better since I went low-carb.

I've only been on Atkins for 4-5 days but I've found I don't get heartburn as I used to when I drank lots of wine. However, in my wine-drinking days, I found OTC Zantac (or a generic) worked very well, but it's best if you take it ahead of time. Pepcid is OK but not as good, I found. You need to find something though becaue uncorrrected heartburn can lead to esophageal cancer.

Wow, thanks Ursula. I can honestly say that I never had any digestive problems pre-Atkins. It's only SINCE Atkins that I heartburn, bizarrely severe fatigue, constipation, less energy during my workouts .. . . but that's only when I'm at induction levels of carbs. If I add a teeny bit of carbs things immediately pick up for me.

Will try the Zantac, thanks!
