Question Pepperoni? Friend or Foe?

Newbie Alert!!!!

I just started the Atkins Diet and have a bunch of questions.

I have been told, by other Atkians that pepperoni is something one can have on this diet.

Now, being part Italian, the part that likes to eat, I have pepperoni just sitting there asking to be eaten.

Is it okay to have pepperoni on this program? I don't actually miss eating it, since I have always been told to shy away from it anyway due to the fat involved.

Some guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

Max

Yes you can have it, try buy one that shows a carb count if you can as some do have sugar added. I ate the mini dry ones almost everyday when I first started.

So what about the nitrate I hear so much about?

I have a stick of pepperoni and a back or sliced pepperoni sitting in the icebox. If I can have pepperoni on this diet than..... this is gonna be a bit better.

I hate to use the word diet on this thing. This is much more than a diet, this is a lifestyle change....for the better I must add...

Thanks Kathy!

I think it is more of a problem in bacon. Just don't overdo it on the pepperoni, for the sodium levels as well.

Being part Italian, going easy on Pepperoni means not eating in the shower........

What is the level of sodium one should try to stick to?

I eat pepperoni all the time....wrap it around cheese & it makes a great snack or lunch! As to how much sodium, that depends on you....are you retaining water? If so, cut back & drink more water.
Good luck on this new WOE.

For me the only issue was the salt. I wasn't drinking enough water and stalled while I ate much pepperoni crisps (love them microwaved until crispy) and pork rind nachos (microwaved w/ cheese and paul newman salsa).

If you are losing and like your food... stop worrying.

Just remember to stop eating when satisfied. Learning to really listen and trust your body becomes very important.

LOL!!!!!!

Pepperoni is for SURE my friend. I just love it!! I limit myself to one or two servings (14 small slices each) of it each week. I make sure to drink extra water on these days.

I have eaten it every day for breakfast since I started this WOE (I’m allergic to eggs so that was the next best thing I could come up with!). No special brand, just Hormel. 1 serving of pepperoni, ½ oz of swiss or mozzarella and some sliced green pepper eaten together tastes just like pizza . I agree, try it. If you are loosing while eating it then keep it.

Just got back from seeing my doctor. Told him I was on the Atkins Diet... he told me to go for it. He had used it in the past and had good results.

Of course this is coming from a doctor that at one time weighed 353 pounds. When I first started going to see him he was a huge man. We talked about weight for a few minutes and he told me he had the gastric bypass surgery and had already lost 51 pounds. He was down to about 302 at that time.

Well today I asked him how it was going.... he was now down to 253, he had lost 100 pounds in about 6-7 months!

Anyway, he said Atkins was good science, but to use my head. So.... that is enough of an okay to move forward for me.

BTW, the blood pressure was normal, and the blood work comes back in a few days....looking forward to getting that information.....

Max

PS. Pepperoni *IS* a food group, just ask my mother!

Pepperoni is my new best friend! Especially like it crispy from the microwave.

If you are worried about nitrates and/or sodium you might want to try a meat shop and look into the different types of pepperoni. I was able to get one with no sugar or nitrates and low sodium....however, it was VERY rich. I could only eat about 2 thin slices, but man it was good.
