Default whale skin

I was watching the discovery chanel and saw a bit on hunting whale. They said that the Eskimos depend on whale skin and the blubber underneath to provide essential carbohydrates. Does anyone know what makes whales have carbohydrates in their skin? I want to be sure of my carb intake if I ever run into some whale skin............Fit day didnt have this, can you believe it?

Don't know. I know they eat it to stay healthy--keeps them getting scurvy and for energy. Maybe the reference was to the energy it brings being similar to carbs? I dunno, I'm taking a stab at it...

wow if that is all the carbs it has then either they are doing Atkins or they are eating an awful lot to get a high carb diet from it. Wonder if they could make whale rinds out of it? LOL

Looks like good stuff for induction - can eat alot before you reach 20 carbs!!

You can write to Inuit Tapirisat in Inuivik NWT and order all you want.

The taste is bland like Chewing gum with out any flavouring - would need spicing up my DH says - he spent 7 years in the Artic.

I am glad to know that there isnt a whole lot of carbs in muktuk. I want to be prepared to eat any meat that I may come across. I must have been a boy scout in a former life............. I also think that it is interesting that the first thing I thought about when I saw the show on Discovery was "can I eat it?"

Quick answer is yes you can eat it. The real question is do you want to? Good exercise for the jaws I am told - lots of chewing.

I think I'll memorize the nutritional information just in case I run out of legal snacks and there happens to be some whale blubber laying around.

Now that I eat lots of animal protein and fat......I think my only limit would be not eating from the endangered list.

Taking the numbers given by stardust that each 3 ounces of muktuk has only 1.2 carbs but 403.4 calories You would have to eat 16.6666666667 servings to get to 20 carbs. The bad news is that would be a whopping 67773.3333331 calories. Could I still lose on that ?
