Default Is unsweetened coconut milk induction friendly?

I hope so!

Here are the nutrition facts:

Serving Size: 1/4 cup (60 g)

Calories: 90
Calories from Fat: 80
Total Fat: 9g
Total Carb: 1g
Dietary Fiber: 0g
Sugars: 0g
Protein: Less than 1g.

When I plugged the data into the Hidden Carb counter using the Nut and Seed Products category, I used 0.5g for protein and I got the following:

Actual Carb count 3.18 g
Difference by weight 2.18 g

The link below will fill in all of the blanks for the Hidden Carb counter:

http://www.lowcarb.ca/low-carb-tool...&calculate.y=11

What do you think?

I really need fat and I am so limited in terms of cheese because I am going through a Candida cleanse.

Even though coconut milk is high in medium chain fatty acids, it's still technically a nut and should probably not be eaten during induction. Coconut oil, OTOH, would be allowed.

Yes, this is ok during induction. The Atkins site has many induction recipes using unsweetened coconut milk in them if you are interested.

Becki...it very well might be okay for induction, but I'm going by the list of allowed foods for induction and I don't see coconut or coconut milk on it. I may have missed it, but it's important to get a clean start on induction and follow the plan as closely as possible for the first few weeks.

I agree, and well said I have noticed many contradictions between the book and the information on the official Atkins site... makes things awfully confusing

4beans4me,

I agree that the information is sometimes contradictory and confusing as provided by the various Atkins sources.

However, sometimes the answers given may shed some light on the situation.

I do appreciate any and all responses to my questions. Please don't give up...

Best regards,

Gigi

Thanks to everyone who answered the questions. I think that I will try a little coconut milk and then test myself to see if my ketosis range changes. I have been in Induction for about a month and because I can only eat cream cheese and mozz due to my Candida cleanse, I need some fat variety.

Lisa, coconut isn't technically a nut, but a "drupe" or "dry drupe" or "false nut". It's actually the seed of a fruit.

(BTW. This is an interesting site on nuts and false nuts - although coconut isn't among them: http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph8.htm )

quark, as you've been on induction for quite a while, you are probably so familiar with your body's reactions by now that the idea of trying it out and evaluate is probably okay. If in doubt, why not mail atkinscenter, explain your situation and ask? Other people have done so with other "special foods" questions and got good replies from them.

Best of luck!

Hi Quark,

Nuts and seeds are not on the lists of allowed Induction foods.

However, as you have gone past the first two weeks, you are not technically in Induction, just continuing to keep your carbs at Induction levels. So yes, I'd say at this point there should be no problem whatever with adding coconut milk.

Cheers.

Rosebud

I didn't say they were. I was just being "technical". Hope noone misunderstood.
