I tried Dr. B's method for checking for glucose in food by chewing up a bit of the the questionable food (and mixing it with saliva) and placing in on the Diastixc to see if there is any change in color whatsoever.

I tried it and got -- no glucose -- great -- but being a scientist and the eternal skeptic, I tried it on pure table sugar as a "control" and guess what -- no glucose -- I suppose I can start eating sugar based on this test I think not.

What might I be doing wrong -- how long do you keep it in your mouth? Has anyone ever tried this?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

The only thing I can think is that the sugar wasn't in contact with the saliva long enough to split the sucrose into its glucose and fructose monosaccharide components. As you know, the dia-stix can only detect glucose.

Did you just put some dry sugar on your tongue? Maybe try dissolving the sugar in water first? Generally if sugar has been added to a recipe, it will have dissolved in whatever liquid or juices there are in the food.

Has anyone else had success with this method of checking for glucose?

I use these for checking my coke when i go out to a pub.they work great,i,ve been given ordinary coke many times instead of diet,but the test strips tell me now.

I use a low-tech method with diet cola. I just drop a little on the back of my hand and then rub it in. If it feels sticky after it dries, I know it has sugar in it.
