Thumbs up More Good News

We are all pretty much convinced that low carb is what's needed to get peoples health back on track but that darned food pyramid still is telling people to eat a suicide diet. We they ever figure it out? Yep! I was just reading an article on the Harvard School of Public Health that has a revised pyramid. In there pyramid the categorize Fats as "Plant Oils" and they are number 2(!!!!) on the pyramid instead of the bottom! Here is a short quote from the article...."These healthy fats not only improve cholesterol levels (when eaten in place of highly processed carbohydrates) but can also protect the heart from sudden and potentially deadly rhythm problems....). Outstanding...now if only the news will spread faster!

Archie,
I was just reading about this on AOL and was coming here to post an article about it! Sounds like people in high places are finally starting to open their eyes and that's a good thing. Here's what the article on AOL had to say....

I don't know if that one is so good. While recomending whole grains, it still has carbs as the main food group. If they keep the carbs high and enourage more fat, that would make for a high fat high carb combo, which results in weight gain and other problems.

They also still limit protiens. How ever the fact they have "White Rice, White Bread, Potatoes, Pasta, and Sweets (Use Sparingly)" is a huge step in the right direction. I love the fact they say to eat veggies in abundance, and fruit in moderation. Listing red meat as bad isn't great though.

Yes, I would agree that there is still a certain danger in the large amount of carbs listed for people like me of whom there are many....basically carb addicts. I expect though that if I had eaten the types of carbs they recommend that I wouldn't have ended up where I am (was?). It wasn't "oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, and brown rice" that got me here....it was whitebread, pizza, doughnuts, bad cereals, and about a million other products made with refined white flour as well as the hidden sugars in everything from my vitamins (!!!) to ketchup and cold meat. If you look further down in their pyramid you see a category called.... "White Rice, White Bread, Potatoes, Pasta, and Sweets (Use Sparingly):" But there are so many positives in this article. They dwell on stabalizing insulin levels which I think is hugely important to solving the obesity epidemic. They also emphasize that the right kinds of fat are not only go but are essential to good health and can lower cholesteral...I could hardly believe I was reading that!! They even take the Atkinesk step of including a multivitamin as part of the pyramid!

The AOL article is also interesting but focuses mainly on calorie intake and doesn't stress the problem with high glycemic index carbs but at least they are recognizing that the pyramid is a mistake.
