Dina, you had asked about Dr Lutz's statement on obese adolescents, sorry to take so long to get back. It's lengthy, so will just hit the high spots - also has a graph. The graph shows a normal person receiving a dos of 50 gm sugar, going from less than 70 up to 130+,returning to <70 after about 2.5 hrs. The obese adolescents started higher, closer to 80, but only spiked to about 90, took much longer to get down to their initial level. What he says is that they have too much insulin circulating, "Here's the cycle we believe is taking place...Large amts of carbs are consumed daily, causing a steady flow of insulin into the blood. This continues for years, getting to the point where more and more insulin is always in the blood. The pancreas, which produces insulin, is now very sensitive to any carbohydrate load. There is an overreaction by the pancreas, too much insulin is produced, and the glucose is removed from the blood too rapidly. To make matters worse, the glucose is not fully utilized for energy, and thus is stored as fat. This is a vicious cycle indeed. As more carbohydrates are eaten, more insulin is produced, and more fat is stored in adipose tissue." Lutz, p 39-40. BTW, he also shows patient records of these kids after a lc regime, where their curves approached normal. He concedes it is not always easy to overcome addiction to carbohydrates in teenagers. Ha, or anyone else!! hope this helps. If you want to see the graph, I guess I could try to scan it with my new scanner. Bill
