Default My Funniest LC Mistake Was...

For me, it was treating myself on Tuesday to the Reese's LC peanut butter cups, and Stover's mint patties. Both were a buck fifty at Walmart, and darn if I wasn't tired of making my own. No kids in the car, I had the day to myself, so...why not?

One peanut butter cup tasted sooo good. Another tasted even better. At 2 carbs each or so, I thought I could afford it. Well, ride along with me and you'll see that it takes 20 minutes to get to Costco from Walmart. No kids. No hurries. Just Annie and her candies. Enjoy! What the heck, life is too short and I've been so good on Atkins.

Two hours later, I get home and dang if I didn't have the worst stomach ache since heck was a pup. If you've seen the original 1950 Cheaper By The Dozen, then you'll understand when I say "I saw Mrs. Murphy". Well, Mrs. Murphy and I got really nicely acquainted all night long. I mean, all night long. Oh good grief.
Lesson learned: Listen to the folks here who say to watch the malitol effect. One other lesson learned: What was at Costco in the candy section? Sugar-Free Reese's peanut butter cups and chocs, $7.99 a bucket. I'll pass, thank you.

Any other good stories about LC mistakes?

7.99 a bucket!!!!! I am soooo there! I love those things! I haven't really noticed them upsetting my stomach, either, but I try to only have a couple a day.

My stupidest mistake (although not as colorful as Annie-Pie's) was believing the can labels on imported food. I made this mistake twice. Once on some Indian food - Patra. This is basically a can of a vegitable mixed with graham flower, tightly compressed. You pop it all out of the can and cut it in slices and deep fry it. Tastes awesome. The can, from India, said 2g of carbs per serving. I got a can made from USA, 45g per serving!!! Serving sizes were about the same too!

My second mistake was it a can of Dolmas from Greece (grape leaves filled with rice - I know real stupid). The can said like 2g of carbs per wrap so I ate a few before realizing, "Hey, there's rice in there!" Oh well. I'm still living.

hahaha Annie.. that cracked me up..

my story isn't as interesting.. i walked into the supermarket, saw roasted chestnut samples on displayed.. never had chestnuts in my life.. thought.. hmm.. nuts are supposed to be good for you right? lots of fat, low in carbs, that sort of thing.. so i grabbed one.. delish!!! took another.. 7 chestnuts later, the free sample dish is empty! (i'm such a PIG! standing there eating all the nuts and making heavenly faces in the middle of the store) anyway.. came home, threw 7 chestnuts into fitday... 30 grams of carbs! like 2 grams of fiber! holy cow! well seeing that my daily intake of carbs has more than been reached by 11am in the morning, i decided what the heck, i want to finish that beautiful looking durian fruit too (it was just BEGGING to be gobbled up)! 1 hour and 200 carbs later, i was done with my orgy... that was last sunday..

didn't get back into ketosis until this morning

Mine is the same. Last time I did low carb I was announcing a day of pee wee football games. I took all my treats with me. I ate 3 chocolate bars in like 30 minutes. Well after about a hour all hell breaks loose in my gut. Cramps from hell. I was smelly the other guys out of the booth. Then it hit I took off running (Was 350 then) hit the top step of 10 and down I went head over heals!!!! People said they heard cuss words not nvented as I went down. I layed there about 4 min thinking I was going to go in my pants then die from the pain of falling. I got a major urge if you know what I mean and literally jumped up in doing so I knocked some poor lady kneeling next to me over and I trotted off for the portalet. Imagine a 350lbs man racing to a portalet 3 times to small. I got there (about 40 yards away) and 5 people where in line. It was freak time. I took off for the woods!!!!!!
Ther is a video some guy took off me running/ limping to the portos. I looked like quasimoto running out of the notre dame cathedral!!!!!!!!!!
At the end of the year on awards night I was givin
"the fastest dash to the toilet award"

These stories crack me up! I thought I was the only dork out there. Not that you're dorks, but... LOL

I tell ya, can't we all picture Ian making the dash? When are we privvy to watching the video, Ian? Bet your wife holds it as leverage sometimes, eh?
Well, as they say, "It all comes out in the end!"

PS Erick actually I think they're like 6.99 a plastic bucket at Costco. Still wonder if it's cheaper at Walmart. As for the grape leaves, we have a beautiful huge arbor in our back yard with four giant grape plants on it...the grapes are in season now, at least the green ones are. There's plenty of leaves here for me to roll come next spring, as long as we leave the rice out. Cauliflower for sushi, I just cannot fathom. Also the same for grape leaves. But hamburger with onion and spices and spinach and basil, now, that would be great in grape leaves, eh? Just not out of a foreign can!

Hamburger with onion and spices in the grape leaves sounds very good!

No Wal-Marts anywhere near me so I'll have to settle for Costco.

So far my funniest lc mistake was (remember I am new-have lots more to go) when I first went shopping for the woe . I had not read the book and i had not found this site yet. I was just going on what people had told me. I was reading all the cans ,jars and boxes when I came upon melba toast. On the back of the box was the carb count and It was very low so I purchased the box and took it home. I got out he cheese and the melba toast -ate a few and started to read the box. I looked at my daughter in horror--she thought I was having a heart attack. On the side of the box was the auctual carb count for the toast and at the back of the box was a carb count for a chicken recipe. My first day and I cheated already---oh well live and learn--but the chicken recipe looks good.

Potatofree, that was pretty funny about the reeses bucket. I swear, I am going to go buy a bucket of lc candy and eat it in one LOOOOOONG sitting (sitting where?) if this constipation doesn't clear up (clear out?) soon!

I think the candy mistake must be common. When I first started Atkins way back in 1998, there were not a lot of options for desserts. Then one day I walked into a candy store and they sold s.f. chocolate fudge. They gave me a sample and I bought about 10 good size chunks. I ate them ALL in one sitting that evening, justifying it by thinking I hadn't had chocolate or sweets in a year. I had to call in sick the next day because my stomach cramps and other symptoms were so bad. That afternoon after it seemed like I would be ok, I bravely ventured back to the store and told the lady what had happened and that maybe the batch was tainted. She laughed at me for a bit, then pointed at the label "maltitol - too much intake can have laxative effect". I was really embarassed and humbled. AND I can control myself around sf chocolate now.

I, too, have been a victim of the maltitol effect. A friend brought me a box of Russell Stover Peanut Butter Cup seconds from the RS factory. Hmmmm they taste like little bits of heaven.

I learned through the same mistakes you've made that four are dessert but six cause a system dump, if you'll pardon the phrase. Whenever I'm find myself in Jasmine's predicament I munch 6 PB cups and everything's better within a couple of hours.

<giggle> I can easily pardon teh phrase "system dump" since I was about to call it "giving birth to a nine-pound water poop"!!

I made the bag-of-Russell-Stovers mistake once, too, and that was enough! I had a terrible flu/sinus thing about six months back, and when I'm sick, all I want to eat is sweet stuff. I was feeling too wretched to want to cook or eat real food, so I just kept popping a truffle here, a truffle there, and prettty soon the whole bag was gone. However bad you think the maltitol effect is by itself, I promise it's a whole lot worse with exploding sinuses and a wretched cough! Thankfully, the codeine in my cough syrup took the edge off things a bit, but it still wasn't an experience I'd wish on my worst enemy...
