Thumbs up Some thoughts for those struggling in the first weeks

I've only been on Atkins for a month and a half, but as of last week, I finally feel comfortable with everything. I'm finally at a point where this feels easy. I was very frustrated at first so I thought I'd pass on some thoughts.

#1 - follow the rules and excercise! I faltered a few times the first week with some questionable resturant food. If you're not sure, don't order it and get something else, look it up, and maybe try it next time. Excercise excercise excercise! I waited about 3 weeks before I started working out every morning for 30 minutes. I wish I would have started sooner. It really does help.

#2 - find what works for you. certain foods slow some people and accelerate others. Go figure, sometimes it's not fair, oh well. Take the advice on here and start with the foods that are the most common stallers. I think it was cheese for me. Also, take the supplements. After a very discouraging start, I read the stalls chapter in Dr. Atkins' book and got some L-Carnatine. The standard dose didn't do a whole lot the first week so I stepped up to 1000mg a day. That really seemed to help! The Dr. said that in some cases he had people taking up to 5000mg per day! Guess I was a little luckier. I could try 1500 or 2000 mg, but I'm comfortable with the loss I'm seeing now, plus that crap is expensive!

This may sound like rambling, but I'm down 25 pounds and almost half way home and really excited, finally. I think I lost 3 pounds the first two weeks. After finding my stall foods, playing with supplements, and getting into a regular workout schedule. I'm losing 5-7 pounds a week now and I'm feeling so comfortable with everything I'm just going to stay in induction until I hit my goal. Use your body as an experiment since we're all different. I thought I was just to resistant to all this, and maybe it was just a matter of time for everything to "click" with my body, but it finally happened. Good luck, and don't give up!!!!!

You shouldn't stay on induction until you reach your goal, you need to work through the Atkins phases.

Why, Dr. Atkins says it's okay in his book?

Here's the article I was thinking about:

How do I know when to move from one phase of Atkins to the next?
You are ready to leave Induction and add more carbohydrates to your meals when you have lost much of the weight you want to shed. Or you may be bored with the options available on the Induction phase and willing to trade a slow-down in the progress of your weight loss in return for eating a wider variety of foods. The next phase is called Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) when each week you add another 5 grams of carbs per day in the form of nutrient-dense foods, such as more vegetables, seeds and nuts, and low-glycemic fruits such as berries. So the first week on OWL, you go from 20 to 25 grams per day; the following week you would move to 30 grams per day and so on. Change the increments on a weekly basis until your weight loss slows to one to two pounds each week. Slowly increasing your carb intake allows your body continue to use its fat stores for fuel.

When you are within five or 10 pounds of your target weight, it is time to move to Pre-Maintenance. You will now be broadening your range of foods while learning what you can eat without regaining weight, adding 10 grams of carbohydrates per day in weekly increments. So long as you continue to lose weight at a slow, almost imperceptible rate, you can begin to add starchy vegetables and whole grains, such as brown rice or whole wheat bread. However, if adding these foods results in cravings or make you gain weight, you should stop eating them immediately.

After you have maintained your weight for four weeks, you will have transitioned to the phase called Lifetime Maintenance, where you are eating a whole-food diet. On rare occasions, you may be able to indulge in cookies, cakes, candies and other junk food, but in general you will continue to avoid products full of sugar and white flour to maintain your weight.

Well, I'm not willing to trade a slow down in weight loss for a wider variety of foods. Like I said originally, I'm very comfortable and happy with the results I'm getting now. I'm just going to skip OWL and go straight to pre-maintainance.

I'm sticking with around 20g carbs a day too, just widening the foods I eat from the ones on the Induction list
