Talking L-caratine question

Hello Everyone...I have a quick question. I am on Atkins and I take daily supplements. I take a very very good multi-vitamin, Omega Oils, extra Chromium. It was recommended that I take L-caratine but Im not sure exactlly what dose I should take. Someone borrowed my Atkins book and they havent returned it so i cant look it up. I seem to remember that Dr. Atkins recommended 1000 mgs /day. Can anyone help?

Hi! Atkins recommends 1500mg. of L-carnitine for weight loss but it's only if you feel that your metabolic resistance to weight loss is high. I looked it up in my DANDR book to make sure I was right. Looks like you are doing wonderful. Good luck!

I can't imagine taking 1500mg. of L-carnitine. Who could afford it? Or does anyone know of a place it is reasonable?

The best place to buy the L-caratine ( as well as other supplements) is Puritan Products. Their website is www.Puritan.com. Right now they are having a 3 for 1 sale. I got L-caratine (500mg) bottle of 50, buy 1 get 2 free.

Thanks, PKetelboet .

I already get my supplements thers. You can't beat their sales. But since I take quite a few supplements already, and stuff for my pre-Atkins hair loss and supplements for my husband, it's still pricey. Puritan.com rocks.

And, thinking about it, I don't want to burn fat any faster than I am...I'm already releasing more etrogen than I can handle.

Thanks, ira.

I sent away for their catalog. I found their online ordering user-unfriendly.

L-carnitine is recommended at doses of 1500-2000mg per day for heart and cholesterol health concerns. Although that dose is also suggested as possibly helpful for fat loss, the truth is that much higher doses may be required to achieve measurable results --- up to 6g (6000mg) per day .. (study results )

This supplement may be helpful (in high enough doses) for extreme metabolic resistance; this means no lbs lost, no inches lost and no evidence of ketosis/lipolysis despite doing the program to the letter. But there are other less costly measures to try first, such as Atkins' fat fast ... this is discussed in the books and at www.atkins.com

As a general weight loss supplement, its benefit is "iffy" at best when taken at lower doses. And it's very, very expensive. If you have high cholesterol or triglycerides, and/or history of angina, l-carnitine may be of greater benefit for those conditioins; best to discuss with your health care provider.

my 2¢

DoreenT, thanks much for the info on L-carnitine

I'll think I'll save my $$ on this one.

I can't even get my health care providers to test my progesterone level, let alone discuss suppllements.
[I am in the market for a new gyn, though : ]

I purchased the L-Carnitine from HSN.com and used it for 2 months. No weight loss.

mariejoe, If you can't get your healthcare provider to discuss things with you or test you for things that you have concerns about, CHANGE YOUR PROVIDER! There is nothing more important than "you". This is the person who is supposed to help keep you healthy, and try to provide answers to your questions. If you are uncomfortable in the least, switch. There are too many good doctors out there to stick with someone who won't answer you.

Drswife5,

Thanks, I know you are right. My derm is a good doctor, but she is limted in what she can prescribe.
My gyn is the one who really let me down He did the wrong blood work when I first went to him with my hair loss. The hair loss that started shortly after he prescribed femhrt (a low-dose HRT). I went to him for NATURAL hormones and he talked me into femhrt. I started losing my hair and my sex drive and he never correlated this with femhrt. Of course, at the time neither did I, but I pay him big$$$ to know these things.
He recommended an endo for my hair loss. The endo he sent me to, the receptionist didn't even know if they dealt with hair loss...NEXT!!!! The endo I finally go to and and she only does non-female hormones. Hormones are hormones??? Although the endo's tests came back "normal", [well, I read on the low end of "normal", we'll see], I'm gonna have my derm AND my NEW gyn look at the results, too. Also, my new derm has a reproductive endo on staff, and, although they are usually for fertility, at least he is there for help if needed.

And then, I go into TE shedding from Atkins. Someone on the hair loss talk forum sent me to this forum, thank God. At least I know others lose their hair from Atkins and it will come back.

I see the new gyn August 5th, . I know this woman prescribes natural hormones, I'm already weaning myself, every other day, off the femhrt. I've read Dr. Lee's book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause:
The breakthrough book on natural progesterone. I'm convinced I've had estrogen dominance for about twenty years, and I was never on BCP.

When did it happen that the patient has to do the research to tell the doctor what's up??? Sorry for venting...

Oh, well, hope springs eternal
Wish me k=luck on the latest doc...
