Thumbs up Has anyone tried this meat?

I know, I know, this is a little off the "support" topic, but I tried a new meat this weekend and was so impressed that I wanted to share it with everyone and see if anyone else has ever tried it.

Buffalo -- WOW! Bought some at Harris Teeter and had grilled buffalo burgers for dinner last night with yummy broccoli and butter. It tastes alot like beef, but less fatty and with a hint of wildness. I'm a big fan of venison, too, but this is much milder.

It's a bit pricey, but most good meat is these days. So, has anyone else tried ground buffalo or buffalo steaks? Would love to find out where to buy some steaks.

Smiles

Smile We've tried them.

We thought they were pretty good. Found them in the frozen meat section at the regular grocery store. They actually had a small case section just for buffalo meat products. I can't remember what all they had besides the burgers. Maybe sausage? They were a bit pricey, but it was nice to just have something different. I later saw organic buff meat at the health store. Much pricier!

Angus is referring to the type of Beef. It is not Buffalo. Black Angus is another way they put it. They are Big Black animals that are meatier and leaner. They do cost more to buy also. But it has its own distint flavor

There used to be a buffalo ranch out side of town here and the stores would carry all kinds of the meat. They closed down about 2 years ago unfortunetly. They are trying to introduce more buffalo meat on the reservation to the north of here. Apperently it's lower fat and healthier and they are hoping it will help the rising obesity epedimic that is happening there.

I LOVE buffalo.
Here in the Pacific NW there is a chain called Fred Meyer's, (now owned by Kroger) that has a buffalo "season" usually early march. Steaks, ground, loins, chops, waddevah. I prefer lamburgers to buffalo burgers, but still is ossum, and better than Possum!

Default has anyone tried this meat

Yes, buffalo is great - I also got mine at Fred Meyer, and while on vacation got some at another store, maybe Albertsons. Anyhow, it is good, but wish it weren't so pricey. I think they are trying too hard to market it as a health food - we're all supposed to be so scared of fat, and it has less. But after reading Atkins and Mary Enig and some of the people on Cholesterol myths and Cholesterol Skeptics, I am not sweating saturated fat anymore. By the way, some nutritionist in the news item about trans-fat labeling had his knickers in a wad, worrying that some poor doomed soul might read the labels, and then pick a product with 6 grams of saturated fat instead of one with 2g of unsaturated and 2g of trans-fat. ????? There are two buffalo ranches locally ... not that it's cheaper or anything like that But the meat is delicious .. very, very lean so you have to add fat or a sauce so it doesn't dry out. I was told to cook at a lower temperature too.

One of the places makes smoked buffalo sausage .. OMG it's delicious

In some parts of the country it's called bison .. so you might find it under that name also.

If you have ever heard of Tumbleweed, it is a restaurant that serves up a mean, lean Buffalo steak. It is so thick, and since I like mine Medium, very juicy. I have heard that Buffalo is actually better for you than beef. Tastes pretty darn good, so I'm not going to argue.
If there is a Tumbleweed in your area, and you've never been there, try it. They have the most AWESOME white chili I have ever tasted in my life, but hey, no beans, so that's out for me. I'll take the steak!

Buffalo- is that like Bison burgers? Several restaurants around here have bison burgers (its the midwest we have pages of burgers) and its supposed to be leaner and a bit healthier than beef. Is that the same thing? Never tried them but heard they are GOOD.

Lisam33 - Yes, I do believe that Buffalo is also called Bison. That is what I have always thought. It is great meat, and very fulfilling! Even more so than beef! I'm not sure how, since it is much, much leaner.
