Wink HOW much is enough???

I have posted a lot and gotten some great advice..and I thank you guys for answering my questions

Now .another one LOL How much fat in the Atkins diet is enough? Everyone keeps saying get enough fat..the more fat the more you lose and I want to know..how much is enough? In grams..what am I looking for? I don't count calories just carbs...I am losing very well on induction this is day seven and I am in ketosis. I am concerned that I am getting enough of the fat I need to continue to lose..

Any ideas??? Thanks in advance..I know someone out there knows this answer!

Hi,

The rule of thumb seems to be:

3/4 calories from fat

10-12 times either your goal weight or current weight in total calories

You can figure the calories of fat you need -- divide by 9 and get the grams.

Hope this helps.

I am not counting fat grams or calories at all. I did try fitday but geeze I don't have time to do that everyday. I am very strict on carbs but as far as the rest of it, I don't count.

Let me be sure I'm getting this right. If I want a goal weight of 170 pounds I should be eating 10 to 12 times (1700) then divide by 9=189 grams of fat per day????

Anything to do with Math confuses me, but 70% seems to be good for many, including me.

Whoa ! How easy is that? My weight times 12 divide by 9 and boo-yah! Okay Thanks...now I know I have read the Atkins New Diet Revolution...and I have the Atkins New Diet Revolution Cookbook that I love...but I don't remember reading some of the things I read on the boards. See why you guys are so helpful? Experience is wayyyy better for me than anything else..and I am learning from everyone's trial 'n error on here.
So great to know I am not all by myself on this diet!
Thanks a bunch!!! Again..when I am skinny I owe everyone a low carb milk shake! **grins**

For the mathamatically challeneged:

Following the 10x or 12x caloroies/day 70% Fat it would be

Min fat grams/day=Weight*10*0.078
Max fat grams/day=Weight*12*0.078

Ex:
Min 150lbs=117grams of fat
Max 150lbs=140grams of fat

Is the 70% of FAT all supposed to be one type though? Guess I need to go read again.

Default Clarification

Whoops! Guess I wasn't as clear as I wanted to be. Here's an easier formula based on the info in my earlier post:

To find your "target" fat grams:

_______ x _11_ x _.75__ = fat calories
goal
weight

Then, divide calories by 9 to get fat grams!

So if your goal weight is 130:

130 x 11 x .75 = 1072 goal fat calories

1072 divided by 9 = 119 goal fat grams!

* the value 11 I used could be 10, 11, or 12 (up to you)

* Some say to use .7 instead of .75

Hope this helps!

Okay my goal weight is 118-120....here is what I got:

120 x 11 = 1320
1320x .75 = 990

Then: 990 divided by 9 was 110 ?

Am I even close to the fat calculating thing? LOL

Help I am no good at math...somone do 120 which is my goal weight

Thanks!

Right on, Roslynn!!

But this calculation is assuming that your total calories consumed is 11 times your goal weight. You have to count calories to make sure that 70 to 75% is from fat.

Be careful not to make things too difficult, or you'll drive yourself nuts!! I'm doing induction right now, too, and using Fitday for carb counting, and I find that if I stick to the basic foods (eggs, meat, cheese and salad greens), and enjoy plenty of full-fat dressing on those greens, my fat calories end up at about 70% quite naturally without my having to manipulate them in any way. (Fitday calculates these percentages for you, by the way -- just look at the chart at the top of your food screen.)

I think Dr. Atkins made a point of getting enough fat because so many people actively try to avoid it thinking that this will help their weight loss. So eat enough and don't avoid fat (eat the skin on your chicken, use full-fat dressing, etc.) and you should be fine.

Thanks for all the great advice. I started using the FitDay tonight and learned I'm not eating enough fats!!! I cannot imagine eating more, but never call me a spoiled sport. Onward and downward!
