Question Mayo Clinic Diet

A couple of years ago, I went on the Mayo Clinic Diet. I got a piece of paper that was photocopied from somewhere and it listed things to eat and not to eat, including 1/4 cup of grapefruit juice with each meal.

This was my very first try at a serious diet and the first time I had ever heard of a high protein/low carb diet. I lost about 30 pounds in a year's time and felt better than I had in a really long time.

Then, not too long ago, I heard somewhere that there was no such thing as the Mayo Clinic Diet, at least not put out by the Mayo Clinic. I don't know who did put it out, but whoever it was, thank you.

Does anyone out there have a clue as to what I am talking about? Does anyone else have a little grapefruit juice with their meals? It seemed to make me feel fuller and also to satisfy my sweet tooth.

I am trying PP now, but I really miss the grapefruit juice. Any thoughts out there?

Hi Sandy,

Yes the so called Mayo Clinic Diet actually has nothing to do with the Mayo Clinic.

From what I can gather, it is very similar to Atkins or Protein Power with the addition of grapefruit at every meal.

¼ cup of grapefuit juice will give you about 5 carbs. I guess it's up to you whether you wish to "spend" 15 carbs on your juice. Personally I'd rather use those carbs on vegies which are going to not only be way more filling but also give you much more nutritionally.

If you're following PP, there's nothing wrong with having a little grapefruit, but have the fruit, not the juice. And keep the portion small, maybe 1/4 of the grapefruit and not with every meal. The fiber is missing from all fruit and vegetable juices which automatically makes them higher in carbs.

i got sucked into trying the so called mayo clinic diet. it didn't work so good for me. i don't do good with eat this exact food kind of stuff. i end up going out to eat or something and ruin it.

as far as grapefruit goes. i really enjoy just eating it. i peel them like an orange and eat them that way. i usually just eat 1/2 a day. more then that is too much for me. and i like to have a couple of servings of fruit a day and don't want to spend it all in one setting.
