Default Prolactin levels?

My gynecologist ordered a prolactin work-up today because I've been having some girlie issues (odd periods and a small amount of nipple discharge) since I stopped breastfeeding my son. She thinks my levels may be elevated slightly. I'll get the results tomorrow.

Until then...what is it? I understand that it is responsible for lactation and sex-hormone suppression, but beyond that I don't have any idea. What could make it elevated (if it is)? And, if so, what would I do to lower it?
