Report Rates Low-Carb Artery Cloggers
Updated: Tuesday, Mar. 2, 2004 - 10:40 AM

WASHINGTON, Mar 01, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Ruby Tuesday's chicken salad beat a bunless Burger King Double Whopper with cheese as the top artery-clogging, low-carb entree, a U.S. report said.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine evaluated low-carb entrees from 10 restaurant chains based on fat content and calories.

They said some dishes recommended as healthy for low-carb diets still were high in fat and calories -- a combination that can lead to obesity and heart disease.

Going down the list were Chili's beef fajita Caesar salad, Don Pablo's Black Angus sirloin low-carb fajita and In-N-Out Burger's Double-Double burger protein-style.

Ranking sixth was Hardee's one-third pound low-carb Thickburger, followed by McDonald's Grilled Chicken Bacon Ranch Salad with extra chicken and Baja Fresh's Steak Picado.

Blimpie's buffalo chicken salad and Subway's Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap were ninth and 10th, respectively.

Instead, PCRM recommended a low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates.
