Default Looking for a niacin authority

I am freaked out about niacin. I have been taking a slow release (trader joes) niacin and after getting a flush anyway, switched to half a tablet. Well today, four hours after I took it, I had a huge flush effect. I mean super red, itchy, hot and totally uncomfortable and embarrassing ( I was with a client) Is this stuff dangerous? I want to take it since my cholesterol is high but it scares me.
