ab boot camp question

THE EXERCISE:
Slowly bring your knees toward your chest. Switch to the other side and repeat. Keep the movement short to remove the hip flexors from the motion.

Are you suposed to lift the legs strait to your chest? In the picture it looks like he has his legs angles to where his knees are below his hips and his feet are more elivated. Then on the lift do you pull tword chest with lower abs, o do you pull to the side of your chest focusing on obliques and going up to celing more then up to top of bench? (does that make sense?)
