Question flaxseed meal ok on atkins??

Hi!

I discovered flaxseed meal at Wild Oats Market & thought I would try it as a hot cereal. It has 4 carbs per serving & 4 grams of dietary fiber, which equals zero carbs, right? That's what I thought, but after eating some this morning, I am not in ketosis tonight. Do you think this is related to the Flax???

Help! I thought I finally found a way to eat cereal again!

Um, nope!

It sounds like the fiber was pre-subtracted from the carb count. Per tablespoon, flax seeds have 4.11 g carbohydrates and 3.35 g fiber which makes them and incredible bargain. The only edible stuff that has 0 carbs is meat and fat.

In the US, manufacturers can declare that anything under 1 gram of carbs per serving is 0 carbs. And it is the manufacturer who decides what exactly a serving of their product is.

Ketosis is something you go in and out of. It's not a constant.

Hi Jen... I use flax meal all the time and it doesn't affect ketosis as far as I know. I buy my flax seed in bulk and grind it myself in a coffee grinder, so I know that all that's in it is flax. There are many factors that can affect ketosis, and in my opinion you shouldn't stress too much about whether your stick turns purple. You may have had a lot of water on that particular day - doesn't mean you aren't in ketosis, just that you aren't producing enough to show up on the stick.
