Talking Was I ever surpised! A low carb diabetes thing..

Yesterday I was diagnosed with type II diabetes, but that's for another day.
I had an amazing surprise! After the diagnosis I was brought to a the women's diabetic research area in the Clinic. While there I meet up with the dietican and was forced to make an appointment. When asked why I resisted so, I told her, I refuse to do the Diabetes diet that I was put on before and I gained 60lbs. I wanted to do South Beach like my Doctor suggested. She said (And get this!) No problems, I'll help you be successful on South Beach.
My jaw dropped to the floor. A dietician.. letting me do low carb? Wow!!
I now feel excited about all this. She's working specifically with my portion sizes. Isn't this just the coolest?!

I think a lot of physicians have accepted South Beach. If you had answered Atkins, it might have been different. Because the major worry they have with Atkins (rightly or wrongly, the data aren't that convincing) with the high saturated fat, and South Beach doesn't require ketosis, I think most docs will accept SBD once they know what it is. Mine certainly specifically said she liked SBD but wouldn't recommend Atkins. I think it will eventually be the compromise between the low fat and the low carb world - becuase it is both - or neither, depending on your point of view.

Yes I'm very happy about this, the only bummer is that I don't see her till mid April . But I will also share this: Nothing helps you to stay away from carbs that regular blood tests.
Not only is it a good way to keep up with your sugar in your blood but it points out which foods cause spikes that might not be the same as others. My example for today: I had 1/4 cup of blackberries with plain yogurt. Allowed on a lowcarb diet, made my sugar jump 150 points. A no no for me.. at least for now.

Oddly enough this doesn't surprise me at all. My wife has been a type one diabetic for 25 years + and quite a few years ago now she was in for her regular interviews and they put her on a "carbohydrate counting diet"! She picked up a book on carb counts as well as glycemic index counts and has eaten this way ever since. They had her eating something like 30 to 50 grams of carbs per meal and leaning to food that had a better glycemic rating. What diet does this sound most like? (If I didn't have a serious addition to refined grains and sugar I would likely be doing SB rather than Atkins.)

I think in time I may be switching but not until I have hit my goal weight. I know how to work with what I'm doing successfully and, of course, don't want to mess with that but once I've done all the losing I need I will be less strict and may lean toward a lower fat version of low carb.
Don't you still eat grains though? Just whole grains...this is equally as addictive for me although I expect I could control it enough to not get out of control again. I just wouldn't be able to lose.

I'm actually just like you when it comes to grains....I eat whole grains on a very limited basis . They scare me but when I do have a 1/2 cup of brown rice or a wasa rye cracker it sure does make me happy!! I had my first pumpernickel bagel in 11 months this past weekend...it was scary but I actually lost weight over this weekend!!

I also eat Dreamfields pasta about once every 2 weeks.....Its amazing if you haven't tried it yet. Its a semolina flour pasta infused with fiber to bring the carb count down to 5 net grams of carbs per serving. It has been tested on diabetics and they have no rise on blood sugar when eating it. It tastes just like regluar pasta, which was important to me as I really don't like whole wheat pasta. I eat with mixed with a veggie, some chicken breast and marinara sauce Its one of my favorite meals!!
