Question How do you guys handle family trips?

Hi! I'm a newbie to low-carbing (only 3 1/2 weeks so far) and have enjoyed lurking here the last few days. I love this site!

I have a question for you all: how do you handle family trips while low-carbing? The Atkins site says you shouldn't expect to lose weight while vacationing but simply try to maintain. Sounds very reasonable, but I'm wondering if even that may be hard to do. I've been lucky with this WOE so far, but with a trip starting next week I think I'm going to meet my first real challenge. Our destination has wonderful tropical fruit and I haven't had *any* fruit since starting Atkins.(Can't find berries here in Japan and am afraid to eat other fruits..) I'll try to restrain myself, but....
Advice please.

Thanks,

SooCee

Hi SooCee,

I've just come back from Kuala Lumpur and Phuket for two weeks, and remarkably managed to drop a pound during my 2 weeks away.

For me, the key was to avoid the obvious starchy carbs, and in fact sugar was the lesser of the potential evils

The next best thing to berries for LC is melons, which I had from time to time. Steer clear of citrus and bananas. I also had the odd cocktail ( but stuck to the cream based ones rather than the juice based ones).

We ate out for every meal. Breakfast is ok 'cos bacon and eggs is usually available, and for lunches and dinners meat and vegetables in some form was usually around. Avoid obvious carbs like pasta rice etc, and don't worry too much about what sauces are made from (unless you know the're carby (eg sweet and sour)).

If you are staying with family and can't choose what you eat, avoid the things you can and try to make menu suggestions.

Good luck...but most of all enjoy your holiday

Lesley

Hi (again) LCMentor.

Thanks for your good advice. I will definitely go with the melons. As I wrote in the other post, I knew berries were the first fruit to try, but didn't know melons were a good next step. Any suggestions on what fruits I can add after melons? Any fruits I should definitely avoid?

Thanks again,
SooCee
