Default Low Carb Products

Does anyone very ill from eating too much of the low carb dessert products. Sometimes I will eat the atkins ice cream and a couple of bars. It gives me horrible bloating and gas, and then the very next day I am lethargic and feel awful.

annabella. Most of those foods (sweets and LC desserts) contain sugar alcohols in fairly large amounts. I looked at one bar today that had 23g of sugar alcohols. That's a lot.

These have an unfortunate side effect in a lot of people, me included. They can cause abdominal cramps, bloating and/or diarrhea.

Feeling lethargic and nasty the next day could be because you're sensitive to the sugar alcohols. The reason they are subtracted from the total carb count is because they "don't affect the blood sugar levels". But many disagree with this and feel that they are sensitive enough that the sugar alcohols do in fact cause a rise in BS. That might be why you feel lethargic and nasty.....you might have had more carbs for the day than you realized.

There's nothing wrong with LC desserts and meal replacement bars as long as you don't over do them. A treat once in a while, fine....but it's probably not a good idea to eat foods with sugar alcohols on a regular basis.

I have even one of the bars and I get the terrible gas. Any more then that and I have bowl problems, cramping, tiredness and so on.

Sugar alcohols are partially digested. I think Malitol is 50% digested, so you really are getting at least half that total carb amount, if not more.

Save the desserts for a special treat. Have them only occasionally and then just one so you appriciate them more. Make your own treats at home which have no sugar alcohols and also are less likely to have hidden carbs or transfats. Cheesecakes are always a great bet

I don`t get ill, I just get fatter. I am thinking that it is processed foods, fake foods, invented foods that create much of my excess `carb` problem. When I eat a protein bar of any brand, I tend eat more calories that day - by about the number of calories that are in the bar or bars that I ate that day. Apparently my brain and / or body don`t acknowledge this stuff as food. Protein bar, candy bar, coca cola are all the same to me.

I would recommend having these on rare occasion, like TOM and you NEED chocolate. Something that does that to our bodies isn't healthy!!
