Default Some information

My mother volunteers at a local hospital auxilary, she has been doing this for years.

She was in last week, and noticed a couple coming out of the hospital, he had been in the hospital and almost didn't make it. The lady overheard Mom talking about my weight lose on Atkins.

The husband had what is called Diverticulitis and quite a severe case. He had been in the hospital 3 weeks and was finally going home. Mom believe he was in his early 40's.

So he and his wife had started following what they thought was the Atkins Nutritional Approach.

So, what happened?

They didn't eat any vegetables, none at all, I. E. no fiber. Can you imagine trying to go to the bathroom with NO fiber.

Obviously, they didn't read the book, just listened to a few things on the news and her husband almost died of it. It wouldn't have happened if he did not have the disease, but is easily controlled with 4 cups of vegetables a day or fiber supplements.

The doctor that attended to him told them he didn't know what had cause the problem, but that everyone needs fiber in one form or the other and to start taking fiber pills immediately. (I am sure the doc is not familiar with the Atkins approach enough to say they were not following the Atkins approach).

Long and short of this is a "meat diet" is very dangerous to your health. However, the Atkins approach is the greatest thing to happen to a great many people, myself included.

Thought I would share, lots of people posting how they don't like vegetables...

Hi,

Thanks for posting this. Very scary!
I know - I'm also worried when I hear people "can't eat veggies" or "don't like water". It's mandatory on this WOE.
Don't change doctor A's orders, folks....

I eat alot of vegetables and had a little constipation but it worked itself out on its own. I agree with what you said about the news. People hear on the news that it is a no-carb, high meat and fat diet and instead of reading up on it and they doom their health by following the media's example. i also encourage everyone to learn to enjoy their veggies. LCers no longer have the vast fruit choices we once had and something has to replace them. As you also know, we are an example to the world and as soon as something happens to one of us the finger points at the diet not the mistakes.
