Read the label of whatever Metamucil you take. Regular Metamucil actually has a fair number of carbs in it. They make a sugar-free Metamucil for diabetics that doesn't have carbs but is full of all kinds of artificial flavors and sugars. In my opinion, pure psyllium husks (basically, Metamucil without all the additives) are better. The only brand I have found that sells pure psyllium husks is Konsyl, but there must be some other out there.
Personally, I eat a lot of vegetables and some nuts, but still don't get enough fiber without adding in the psyllium. I've never tried flaxseed, but I'm thinking about it. Some people swear by it.
