Question No Calorie, No Carb Ketchup

Hello all,

I just bought a bottle of Walden Farms Calorie Free Tomato Ketchup.

Serving size is 1 Tablespoon. All Nutrition Facts are 0, except sodium (170 mg).

The ingredients are: Water, tomato paste, vinegar, cellulose gel, salt, maltodextrose, food starch, onion powder, garlic powder, egg yolk, xanthan gum, propolene glycol alginate, flavorings, coloring, sucralose.

So how can it have NO calories, NO carbs? Even at 1 Tablespoon, there should be something.

Any comments?

you're right! With maltodextrose and tomato paste and even egg yolk, it has carbs. And calories.

You've found the glitch in the labeling laws. If the carb count is .9, they can say "0" Anything less than 1 is 0...anything less than 2 is 1...and so on. Another trick used in labeling is making serving sizes so small (smaller than any normal human would eat the product) that the carb count falls below 1, as well.

Oy, there's just under 5 cals per serving (according to the terse Walden Farms people) and they claim there is a bit somewhere in the labelling law per the FDA that allows them to then claim zero effective effective... they're messing with the label and stretching the rules.

There are at least 2 long threads in the Products Forum about the Walden Farms products and much info. The Search key will help you nail them (if I had more time right now I'd give out the links again).

Enjoy.

Maltodextrose and Modified Food Startch are both not good for low carb. Maltodextrose and Modified Food Startch are both high carb bulking agents. Modified food startch is the same stuff in taco seasoning that causes it to have a high carb count. Tastes good, bad for low carbers...
