Default Diabetic; New to Metformin

Altho I was diagnosed diabetic in 1995 (actually borderline numbers), blood sugar is now at 181 and doctor prescribed metformin. She said it should actually help me drop weight as well. I never heard of this....anyone had this experience? I have to change my diet to "something that works"..as well...(how ambiguous is that..) Nothing has worked since I went through adrenal fatigue...

Thanks

I take metformin for insulin resistance. Some people have reported that it helped them to lose weight but it didn't work that way for me. I still take it though , because I believe it is helping me to maintain good blood sugar levels.

I take Metformin and believe it's helped me lose weight. It's an appetite suppressant for me, for one thing.

You might like to get a copy of Dr Bernsteins book. Although it's a tough plan, it could get you started on learning how to eat to help control your blood sugar through good dietary habits. You need to go well beyond your drs recommendations to avoid the very serious complications-which for the most part are preventable. Another great resource is Jenny Ruhels Blood Sugar 101 forum. She has a whole section on metformin.

Whatever you do, try to manage your disease. Don't rely on the Doc.

I lost weight with Metformin. At the time I thought it was from the nausea it gave me but looking back I don't really know. It kept my sugar low too but i had to stop it.
be well

I just received Laura Dolson's Newsletter, and she has links on the About website to an overview of Dr. Bernstein's Plan, How to get Started, Food Lists, etc. Much info in one place:

Thanks for your help...I'll look for the Bernstein's book.

Today I spoke with a friend who said that a relative took metformin for her diabetes and it made her GAIN weight! Now I really am confused....but I think I'll just wait and see what it does to me.

I gained weight when I first started metformin. It made me feel hungry all the time and I fell off the low carb bandwagon.

Once I got very strict control of my carb intake, back down to just above induction level, I've been able to control my blood sugar without it.

In addition to Dr. Bernstein's plan, other experts, like Dr. Westman and Dr. Vernon, use similar carbohydrate restriction plans to manage blood sugar levels. The Nutrition and Metabolism Society has much information about diabetes and low carb diets. Search under each tab, there are many links to useful information here: http://www.nmsociety.org/index.html
The plan used in Dr. Westman's clinic is in the appendix of Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes.
