Default How many of you....

lost hair doing the low carb thing? I was all gung ho for the longest time and started to notice this HUGE bald spot on the back of my head. My hairdresser said it could be from wearing hair clips, which would make sense, but I don't wear them! Anyhow, I was losing weight pretty well for a while- averaging 3 pounds a week which is really good for me since I'm hypothyroid and Atkins was the first thing I've done and actually been able to lose weight.
I was just curious if anyone else had this die effect. I've kind of gone away from Atkins and have added more fruits and veggies into my diet and I have a piece of regular bread for breakfast instead of low carb but that's the only bread I have all day. My bald spot is still there but last time I was in for a haircut she said it looked like it was starting to come back which would make sense since I'm not strictly on Atkins anymore.

I noticed more hair shedding, especially in the shower.

I checked www.atkins.com and it says to take BIOTIN if you are concerned or have any hair loss do to the diet. I decided to get a Hair, Skin and Nails multi at CVS. So far its okay, only been using it for a few days. You have to take it 3 times a day.

Try the biotin, it should help~

Sadly, the bald spot on my head has nothing to do with Atkins.

However, it is my opinion that being a mid-40's balding thin guy is better than being a mid-40's balding fat guy...

When i first started low carbing my hair was falling out fast. i was totally scared of going bald. After the first few months it slowed down. I always lost a lot of hair, more than i thought was normal b4 low carb, and i still do lose quite a bit, but the loss has slowed and went back to what was normal for me b4 low carbing. ( hope that makes sense)

I did a lot of reading on the subject of hair loss when it started happening to me. I found that many people report a drastic amount of shedding about 3-6 months after any significant change in eating habits, not just low carb.

I'm fortunate that I have a ton of hair and it shed evenly but DH got quite thin up top. I'm happy to report that it's all back to normal now for both of us.

I'm not sure that any topical products help. Just make sure you are eating healthy and getting plenty of water.

Hair loss is caused by ANY diet where you lose weight. It's not just a low carb thing. So I hope people won't go around saying "low carb made me bald!" It does get better and biotin should help. Keep in mind that hairloss from weight loss is temporary. Funny story...when I was on a liquid fast diet, I was losing hair so the doctor had me add 2 tablespoons of canola oil to 1 shake a day...my hair still fell out! Good luck!

Thank you all! LOL STEVE! I'm laughing my head off here. I'm only 29 and have always had VERY thick hair so it was rather sad for me lol. Glad to know it's not just Atkins and it can happen with any type of dieting. I'm going to pick up some biotin and see what happens. I wish I lost it evenly and it wouldn't be so noticable, but no, it's on the back of my head and I have almost black hair so I have this big huge white spot lol- about the size of a silver dollar. Now I can't tease dh- he shaves his head so nobody knows that at almost 30 he's going bald lol. He suggested me shaving mine. Ummm, no, not yet lol.

The biotin should help and take a good multivitamin.

When I was losing weight really fast, I shed like crazy. Now that I slowed down, its all growing back.

Hey outdoor mom - most of the hair loss I have read about (admittedly not enough to be an expert!) is not concentrated in one area - more all over shedding. If you didn't check with your doctor, be sure to keep an eye on it and maybe check with your doctor now. Would hate to make an assumption due to the juxtaposition of events that may not really be related. You know - if this then that, but although diet can cause hair loss, not all hair loss is caused by dieting...

Good luck and keep that happy disposition!

oh thank you for that bit of info. My hairdresser said it could be due to my thyroid too, but once she heard I was doing Atkins she said the same thing happened to her. But I'll be going in next week anyway for bloodwork since I'm due. Thanks for all the help everyone!
