Question Can sugaring (waxing) spike insulin?

This may sound a little paranoid, but I think sugaring might not be atkins friendly. I bought a sugaring kit (veet roll on), and it says among other warnings that the product is not safe for diabetics. This is purely speculation, but the only justification I could come up with for such a caution is the product once applied to pores and skin is absorbed to a degree, and with the high sucrose content (#1 ingredient in fact) naturally this can be problematic for a diabetic because of their insulin problems.

I just wanted to ask here before using it. If I am to cheat, I surely don't want to waste it on a waxing kit !

I would guess your blood stream could absorb it from the skin. Makes you want to read all the labels on all products doesn't it?

I know from regular waxing the wax is pretty sweet (you get it all over your hands, it's not like I was trying to make a meal out of it!) - are they perhaps worried you might taste it?

It's not just the sugaring kits that have this warning; it's regular hot wax too. It has nothing to do with the sugar being absorbed. It's because diabetics tend to have impaired circulation and possible nerve damage in the feet and legs ... they may not be able to feel if the product is too hot, resulting in 1st and even 2nd degree burns. These injuries can then be very difficult to heal and risk becoming infected. There's probably a similar warning for varicose veins too.

Don't worry, it's not absorbed and no insulin spike

*lol* Actually it turns out its got nothing to do with the sugar, Wooo

From the Veet website:

Quote:
Is waxing suitable for everyone ?

Waxing is not suitable for skin that has spots, cuts, varicose veins, moles beauty spot, broken or irritated skin or sensitive membrane areas. Always read the precautions and instruction leaflet before use.

Waxing is not suitable for people with acne, diabetics or the elderly as they have more vulnerable skin which may bruise easily.

Still, I wouldn't eat it

Diabetics have to be very careful with their feet and legs. Any cuts can take a long time to heal and their skin breaks more easily. I'm guessing this is the reason for the warning not the skin absorption thing. Why don't you post on the diabetes board and see what they think?

Talking diabetics sugaring

Nat, as usual, you beat me to the punch.
Diabetics (as well as anemics) often suffer from circulatory problems, and can get pretty severe bruises from waxing or sugaring. Simple to confuse though, and a frightening thought!

But if you can absorb sugar through your skin, I think I ought to avoid holding my kids- they're sweeter than cotton candy!

Those gobs of "skin avulsion in a jar" aren't good for ANYBODY!!!! Against my better judgement for buying a product named "Nads" (I have a teenager.... I know what it's slang for.....) Losing an actual CHUNK of armpit was all the incentive we needed to throw the rest away...

As for absorbing through the skin and babies.. they get more food on their FACES than in the mouth. Maybe they absorb it that way?

Nads took off a chunk of skin on my legs, I'll stick to the razor.
