South Beach isn't really like Atkins, except for the 2-week Phase 1 part which doesn't allow fruit, bread or cereals. I have the book, and after reading it, have to say that it appears to be a low calorie, lower fat, higher carb diet, based on the Glycemic Index. It's rather similar to Sugar Busters. Unfortunately, the arguments against saturated fat are based on the high carb, high insulin model ... but the author provides no references or further reading suggestions.
The menus are simple to follow, but many recipes use low-fat egg substitutes and non-stick pans.
And yes ... the very first sentence in the very first chapter is .. "This is not a low carb diet."
