Default Eye twitching?

About a week after I started LCing I developed a very irritating,
yet occasional, eye twitch in my left upper lid. I have heard
that this can sometimes signify a thyroid disorder.
Does anybody have any helpful info?

Hi Christine!

Yes, it is irritating!
I have had it for a couple of weeks now and hope it goes away soon!

It could be my sleeping schedule (maybe).
I have been getting enough sleep but my sleeping hours have been
all messed up lately.

While searching the internet I ran across a couple different sites
linking eye twitching to some thyroid disorders.
Gets the brain thinking.....

Oh well,
will maybe take a visit to the doc if it doesn't go away soon!

Thanks,
T

Hi,

I'm not sure if I'm hypothyroid or not, but am beginning to suspect.

I have eye twitching and general muscle twitching. Mine is caused from a calcium deficiency. Although magnesium deficiency can cause the twitching as well. Stress, as well as other things, can deplete calcium levels, and from what I'm reading, low calcium levels commonly occur with hypothyroidism.

Thanks for the info Cicely!

I have been paying close attention to my twitch and definitely think
it is sleep related but reading your post about calcium made me
wonder if lack of could be a contributing factor.
I take a variety of different supplements now and have been thinking
of adding extra calcium. I do, however eat a lot of high calcium foods
such as sesame seeds, cheese, meat, broccoli, fish, poultry, lettuce,
and almonds. Still, I think it is difficult to consume all your bodies
calcium needs through food.
Guess I'm off to buy more supplements!! Ha

Could be T. I take 1800mg a day to stave off my twitching, since I know I'm deficient. Yeah, sometimes if our hormones are off, we just don't normalized our intracellular calcium levels correctly. That happens to be my case anyway. Just be careful with the vitamin D intake with taking extra calcium. I wouldn't go over 800iu a day or so unless you are testing that periodically. Vitamin D can be irreversibly toxic if taken in too high a dose. It isn't common to happen but is worth caution all the same. You can get calcium supplements without D (although they are hard to find) if you ever need to take more calcium without getting the D too high.

From the reading I have been doing, it seems that calcium deficiency is common in people with hypothyroid. Gotta do some research on that.

Hope this helps ya!

T, try eye drops. I get eye-twitches when my eyes are dry and relief from artifical tears type eye drops. YMMV

Hope this helps.

Default Eye twitching

I found that when I was overmedicated with Thyroid medication, I had eye twitching, but when my labs were good, and I was not overmedicated, the eye twitching stopped.

Over the years, and switching from one medication to another, I have been highly overmedicated, and under medicated, and now know about all the symptoms for me for each. As soon as my eye twitches, I have a lab test run, and it will show that I am overmedicated. I also read about the eye twitching in one of my Thyroid books, which was a relief, and saved me a bill from the opthamologist.

I hope by now your twitching has stopped, but if it hasn't get lots of rest and try icing your eyelid for ~10 minutes a couple of times a day for a few days. I have had a problem in the past, and onece it starts it seems to perpetuate itself. My eye doc said icing might break the pattern. It has worked for me, but i have always also made a conscious effort to destress and stay away from caffeine. Best of luck...

Hi madigana,

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, my twitching did stop for a while but continues
to return occasionally. Now that my kids are back in school I have noticed it more.
Early mornings and all that homework....uhg!!
Yes, it's definitely lack of sleep and stress!
Maybe caffeine. Although I drink very little!!

Hi everyone:
I get eye twitches too but I also get this strange one: my body has twitches under the skin -all over. Almost feels like mosquitoes landing lightly on my skin.
Also, when I go for a walk, when I get back, I can feel a sensation like oxygen bubbling into my thighs and other meaty parts.

I used to have nervous leg syndrome really bad but that has gotten better (I eat LOTS of flaxseed for the omega 3 fatty acids which are good for the thyroid and I take 1 kelp pill a day for the iodine for the thyroid).

I still wake in the morning with a constant need to stretch (I must do it 10-20 times before I fully wake). Does anyone else get this weirdness?

I used to get eye twitches from stress & caffeine. I've been on synthroid for months & quit caffeine in march. The twitching has stopped. But I know that in stressful situations (my job can be VERY stressful) my eyes will twitch.
