Default Communion Wafers?

Hi All,
last weekend, I went to church and took communion without thinking. After, I realized that it was a bread, but no idea how many carbs are in a Catholic type communion wafer. Anyone know? Am I asking this question in the right forum?

Thanks

I'm not sure but I count it as 4 grams.

Lol Beadmaker

I wouldn't worry about the Communion wafer- they are so thin and light. Also, it isn't bread, it's the Body of Our Lord. And I don't know about you but I need Him on my side!

I know what you mean, I felt terrible because during church one day I was thinking, hmm I wonder how many carbs this has instead of thinking about what it signified. My church also uses grape juice instead of wine, so I was wondering about that too.

I truly would not worry about the amount of carbs in either the wafer or the grape juice unless you are gulping a huge amount of it. Even if you did this every day I don't think there is any real significant amount of carbs. Say an extra prayer and its carb free.

Default Communion Wafers No Problem

I've been on Atkins for five, going on six weeks now and taken Communion (wafer and wine) every Sunday with no problems. Never seen a change in ketostik color or anything. I tried for weeks to get an accurate measure of how many carbs it had, but never found anything more than rough estimates. I think it's not a significant amount of carbs (especially at Roman Catholic churches, where they are quite thin and light (like an eighth of an ounce or less?) I wouldn't estimate that for more than a carb or two, if that. Also, you've got to figure, as far as important things in your diet go, that's probably the MOST important one. I decided just to treat it as something non-negotiable and not worry about it.

Aren't communion wafers and wine (we use real wine) covered under the 'anything you eat standing or kneeling in church or if no one sees you eat it' it's carb/calorie free card? <g> redawn

Communion wafers should not be a concern. And I doubt it even has 2 carbs.

My church uses the little wafer-like discs that look like styrofoam -- anyone know what I'm talking about? They kind of dissolve on your tongue. I can't imagine there could be many carbs in that. Besides, like someone else said, it's symbolic of the body of the Lord. Some things are more important than even sticking to your WOE!

I disagree that there is a sin in asking this question or answering it! I'm sure these wafers come in boxes with the FDA labels on them.

My estimate of 4 grams could be too high. Probably 2 grams is a better guess.

I don't think anyone thinks it is a sin to ask this question.

This woe has us all a little more mindful of what we put in our mouths, thus the carb question.

Cool

And just think, when I was a kid my brother, who was an alter boy, used to steal the baggies of hosts (before they were consecrated) and bring them home so we could play "church"!!!

Communion wafers are so light I'd count them as 0. With regards to the 'wine', if you are Anglican you can take this by dipping your wafer in the wine rather than sipping it. People often do it when they have colds. (And before we get into the how can you catch a desease from the Host?' type argument, God made bacteria and viruses too).

If you are Roman Catholic I don't know what they do - (I thought only the priest drank the wine).

If you are Catholic and believe that the Eucharist is only symbolic of the Body and Blood of Our Lord, you really should not be receiving Communion, as you are NOT in communion with the Church.
Please ask your priest to explain this to you if you don't understand what I'm saying.
