Default new to this stuff......................

Well started induction today and I have a few questions.
Do I need to count carbs if I eat from the acceptable food list?
I noticed my salad dressing has carbs.....2 I think.
Also, when does ketosis ususally begin? I bouth some test strips and don't want to waste them if it hasn't started yet.
Finally, how long to stay in induction phase?

Thank you so much for the help.

Casey

You must count the carbs in everything you eat and drink, even allowed food. Remember it's the net carbs that matter. Net carbs=total carbs-fiber. Two weeks is the minimum suggested Induction period. After a week you'll probably be in ketosis, and could try the strips then. Good luck.
God Bless,

Hi Casey! Start a food journal at fitday.com. When you select what you eat it tallies the calories and the amounts of carbs, fat and protein. Go and register and put in everything you eat.

Good Luck.

Casey, the information you need to count carbs is in the Atkins book. All plain, non-processed meats, including fish are zero carbs. Look in your book for further counts.

well, 'pure' meats (unprocessed) are 0-chicken, beef, pork, fish, pure fat is 0 and water is 0. ALL other foods have some carbs in them. If you own DANDR (newest Atkins book), don't use the carb counter at the front of the book (the fiber isn't subtracted). At the back of the book is a much more detailed list of foods with their carb count. Remember to subtract the fiber grams from the total carbs, because the fiber isn't digested so doesn't count.

Using FitDay is awesome, gives you great counts and you can keep track of your exercise, too! Try it out. BTW, it's free!

Default Fitday is great!

I started Atkins again last week and have lost about 10 lbs so far. I find that Fit Day is a big help in keeping track of the carbs. The cool thing is that you can customize foods and it will adjust the carbs to the portion size you are consuming. You can even add in your own foods if you want a really accurate tally. Just plug in the numbers right off the package and it will save all your personal foods, too. It's really easy, and since I am somewhat a creature of habit on this WOE, it saves my choices from previous days, so if I have the same thing again, I just re-select it from my list.

Definately check it out and Good Luck with induction. I started ketosis about 3 days into it. Be sure and drink lots of water every day. It will help to flush out your system sooner, too.
