Default Avocados! My new favorite fruit!! But...As always..I have a question..

I was looking at the avocados at the store the other day. They were VERY small! The size of lemons and smaller. So I stopped by a fruit stand today and these avocados are HUGE! Like the size of a very large orange, or smaller grapefruit! So..My question is, on FitDay, what do I put? They have a Florida and a California...And it says 1 avocado..Does that mean the lil ones at the store, or the huge one I bought. I sliced it open and spooned a lil out just plain. I LOVED it!! What can I do with it? Thanks!!

Fitday gives the option of cup (or fractions of) cut up so you can do that?

If I remember correctly, California avocados are smaller and dark with a very rough/bumpy skin. The Florida version tends to be larger, with a brighter green skin that's smoother. There are of course more variaties then this but the California and Florida avocados seem to be the most popular.

I personally prefer the California avocados mainly because they have lower a lower carb count and are easier to find.

I prefer California's too b/c they are easier to determine if they are ripe or not. Non-ripe Florida avacados are nasty!

Default What to do with avocados

Hi there !
I think Atkins recommend Hass avocados. I don't know where they're from, but they are the dark ones.
Make a salad with salad greens (try diff sorts, - iceberg, ruccola, baby spinach), yellow bellpepper, spring unions, avocados and fried bacon (in cubes or strips cut into pieces) mmmm I'm getting hungry already. I cut the avocado meat into small cubes, sprinkle with lemon juice to prevent blackening. Jummy...... ( I can eat just bacon and avocado alone as a meal/snack, mmmmmm it contains 0,5 grams of digestible carbs pr 100gr)

Guacamole can be served with anyting really, from Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution page 399:
yield: 2 cups, 8 servings

3 spring union (white and 3cm (1in) green part, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper (or 8-12 slices of bottle jalapenos), seeded and finely chopped
1 medium tomato chopped
2 ripe avocados
1 tablespoon fresh limejuice
2 tablespoons fresh coriander
salt

Place unions, pepper and tomato in a medium bnowl. Slice avocados in half lengthwise, remove pit ans scoop pulp into bowl with a spoon. Mash mixture with a fork.
Mix in lime juice and coriander. Salt to taste.

Total carb pr serving: 6 grams, count only 2 digestible carbs when doing atkins, protein 2 grams, fat 11grams, calories 121

the best thing is to get the book and also the Dr. Atkins New Diet Cookbook. I could not have survived the last few weeks without it.

Good luck

Okay, this is a Florida Avocado..makes sense..I live in Florida The California ones are just so small!! One FL avocado has...
Total Carbohydrates 27.09 g
Dietary Fiber 16.11 g
Total Protein 4.83 g
Total Calories 340.48
Total Fat 26.96 g
One California avocado has..
Total Carbohydrates 11.95 g
Dietary Fiber 8.48 g
Total Protein 3.65 g
Total Calories 306.21
Total Fat 29.98 g

I guess theyre counting on the avocados being the same size? I just couldnt get over how small the CA ones are. I guess Ill eat the FL one I have and then buy some CA ones. As far as what part of it you eat...obviously not the nut thing in the middle..The pit I suppose its called? Do you eat all the way til you get to the skin? The one I have had the texture of mashed potatoes to me. I was thinking of adding some butter and salt and sticking it in the micro. Mmmm! Too bad its higher in carbs, does the CA taste pretty much the same?

Only the skin and the pit (seed) aren’t edible. Everything else is game.

Another simple and quick guacamole dip is using mashed avocado and adding chopped tomato, sour cream, cilantro, cumin powder, salt and pepper. Very tasty!

ok...my 2 year old and I split a california Hass every morning. I peel off the skin throw the pit away mash it up in a bowl mix in a tablespoon of mayo, a tsp of lemon juice and a small amount of chooped tomato.

The CA ones are great because the carb count is lower and the fiber count is so high that your "net" carbs for the snack/meal are very low!

also soft is ripe....they are kinda of yucky if they are hard.
